Simply Written But Not an Easy Read

I have never read anything by Bear Grylls before but having recently waded through a couple of heavy novels this book appealed for its bite-sized chapter-long stories of grit and courage. Not every subject in this compilation triumphs over their own, particular adversity but Bear takes care to build each story around the qualities that make such people focussed and totally and selflessly dedicated to their cause.
Though simply written these chapters are not an 'easy' read. I found myself drawing in a breath at the suffering described by battles with the elements, polar exploration, the conquest of Everest etc. Sadly and more excruciating are the accounts of human beings inflicting unimaginable horror on fellow human beings and I find myself shaking my head even as I write this.
The stories are all of adventure and heroism, in war, in exploration and in the aftermath of disaster but there are many parallels in everyday life that come to mind when tough times inspire ordinary people to give their energy and enthusiasm and sometimes what remains of their lives to help others and for the greater good.
A very thought-provoking and, at times, humbling read.

Hard to read but harder to put down

This collection of stories show just how resilient the human spirit can be! Bear does not try to glamourize the hardship in these stories it is simply the facts and as such has great impact.

a very gutsy book with real depth of spirit.

If you can judge a man by his heroes then Bear Grylls is a man of depth as well as breadth. Some might be surprised, though I suspect the author might understand, that I found this book to be a deeply spiritual one.
These are not so much the gung ho "storming the enemy position in a burst of heroics" type of stories. Such stories have their place; yet these stories are broader and wider than that.
When people find themselves in extreme situations extreme qualities can be drawn out from them. Yet, no only that. Although these are clearly stories of immense courage, amazing tenacity and incredible fortitude; they are something else as well. They are also stories of immense forgiveness, amazing redemption, and incredible gratitude.
These are stories of the grandeur of the human spirit even in the face of intense pain, horrendous suffering, and awful humiliation and despair. These are stories of people realising that they are more than what is happening to them. Remember that "to realise" not only means "to become aware" of something, it also means "to make real". They become bigger than their circumstances "say" they are. They make real some quality or qualities within them which allows them to endure - and in some ways overcome. They do this sometimes by just keeping going, step by painful step in the face of a horrendous situation. They may be apparently defeated, or very close to it, but they just kept going anyway.
These are stories of people who, owing to extreme circumstances, are pushed into rapidly developing and expressing qualities of soul. To my mind, "hard" qualities like boldness, determination and courage are just as much spiritual qualities as "soft" qualities like kindness, compassion, and forgiveness. They are all equally qualities of the soul. What I particularly like about this book is that Bear Grylss seems to fully understand this as he does not just highlight the importance of guts and fortitude (as would be expected in such a book); he also highlights the importance of forgiveness and grace.
I find this very appealing for it is in the soft qualities that the hard qualities find completion and vice versa. This means that there is a wholeness in this book that would otherwise have been lacking. I see it, not only a book of remarkable stories, but also as a deeply spiritual book - and a very gusty one at that.
