A raw emotional read.

I received a free copy of Letters to my Husband from the publisher in return for an honest review.

Elizabeth loses her husband in a tragic accident, he drowns in a nearby pond while saving a young woman. Devastated and overcome with loss and grief she withdraws into herself and finds comfort in writing letters to her husband each night. Who is the young woman he saved? What was she doing at the pond that night? Is her husband really the hero he's claimed to be?

Letters to my Husband was quite an emotional roller coaster. Elizabeth's grief and loss touches your heart, she's lost the love of her life and her world is falling apart. The rawness of the emotion in the book will resonate with any reader who has lost someone close to them.

The story was a wonderful mix of a melancholy and emotion with an undercurrent of suspicion and mystery woven throughout. The pacing was consistent and it was an enjoyable read, it feels wrong saying I enjoyed reading about someone else's pain in this way but we all enjoy a good heart wrenching story every so often.

The book has a few twists but I have to say I worked out early on where it was going and I was rather disappointed that I found so easy to predict. I was expecting to be reaching for the tissues but it didn't have that effect, it did pull on the heart strings but I have to admit there were times later on in the book that I felt like Elizabeth had been grieving forever and I found myself thinking it was time she pulled her socks up and at least tried to put a smile on her face. That sounds rather harsh but it's quite a draining read and grief plays a huge part of the story for almost all of the book, I just felt like it became quite overwhelming at times and there was no light at the end of the tunnel for way too long. Despite this, it was a pretty good read and I would read this author again.

Emotional read with a twist

Letters to my husband.

I knew by this it would be kinda sad, but I didn't get too upset, I think I was expecting more emotional upheaval, not that it wasn't, it was! And it did make me reach for the tissues.

We have open letters to Mike from his wife Elizabeth. The difference is, he will NEVER get to read them, he will NEVER get to see them. He will NEVER know just what Elizabeth is going through without him, because, he is dead.

Something happened one day whilst taking his dog out for a walk, which he does often, near the water.

Mike is a respected Police Officer. He has the kind reputation for doing things for people, he even went into a burning house to save a little child and its Mother. Dangerous? Foolish? maybe. But its not strange, a lot of people would do this. Even though he put his life at risk.

That day by the waters edge, something happened and he drowned whilst saving a girl, a 19 year old girl named Kate.

Kate doesn't remember what happened. Or is she hiding something?

All the way through we have privy to Elizabeth's open letters every now and again, she pours out her heart, her soul, and several questions.

Those around her are devastated, they cannot get her out of her deep thoughts, her withdrawel.

This is wonderfully written, its something that will make you think.

There are twists in this book especially at the end. OK, you can guess it, but you DO NOT KNOW IT, why and the wherefore.

Can you be happily married and still yearn for more?

Mike and Elizabeth wanted children, but it didn't come easy for her to get pregnant, they had to go through IVF in the end. But they were strong, right?

Family secrets
Communication in a marriage is a MUST and this couple had it, but, what wasn't said?

This is a highly recommended read that had me well engrossed for hours.

An uncomfortable read

This well written, emotional novel pulls at the heartstrings rather too much. The plot was ingenious but the heartache and misery were unrelenting, leaving the reader feel depressed rather than uplifted. An uncomfortable read.

Fantastique!

Being a Francophile, I truly appreciated this book. Mr. Black's approach to writing about his travels, encounters and culinary experiences were a delight to read.He does not focus on Paris, but on various areas that produce some of the finest ingredients as well as dishes. The descriptions are tantilizing and give an intimate feel. I enjoyed his style so much I have several of his other books on order.

Simply Written But Not an Easy Read

I have never read anything by Bear Grylls before but having recently waded through a couple of heavy novels this book appealed for its bite-sized chapter-long stories of grit and courage. Not every subject in this compilation triumphs over their own, particular adversity but Bear takes care to build each story around the qualities that make such people focussed and totally and selflessly dedicated to their cause.
Though simply written these chapters are not an 'easy' read. I found myself drawing in a breath at the suffering described by battles with the elements, polar exploration, the conquest of Everest etc. Sadly and more excruciating are the accounts of human beings inflicting unimaginable horror on fellow human beings and I find myself shaking my head even as I write this.
The stories are all of adventure and heroism, in war, in exploration and in the aftermath of disaster but there are many parallels in everyday life that come to mind when tough times inspire ordinary people to give their energy and enthusiasm and sometimes what remains of their lives to help others and for the greater good.
A very thought-provoking and, at times, humbling read.

If you can judge a man by his heroes then Bear Grylls is a man of depth as well as breadth. Some might be surprised, though I suspect the author might understand, that I found this book to be a deeply spiritual one.

These are not so much the gung ho "storming the enemy position in a burst of heroics" type of stories. Such stories have their place; yet these stories are broader and wider than that.

When people find themselves in extreme situations extreme qualities can be drawn out from them. Yet, no only that. Although these are clearly stories of immense courage, amazing tenacity and incredible fortitude; they are something else as well. They are also stories of immense forgiveness, amazing redemption, and incredible gratitude.

These are stories of the grandeur of the human spirit even in the face of intense pain, horrendous suffering, and awful humiliation and despair. These are stories of people realising that they are more than what is happening to them. Remember that "to realise" not only means "to become aware" of something, it also means "to make real". They become bigger than their circumstances "say" they are. They make real some quality or qualities within them which allows them to endure - and in some ways overcome. They do this sometimes by just keeping going, step by painful step in the face of a horrendous situation. They may be apparently defeated, or very close to it, but they just kept going anyway.

These are stories of people who, owing to extreme circumstances, are pushed into rapidly developing and expressing qualities of soul. To my mind, "hard" qualities like boldness, determination and courage are just as much spiritual qualities as "soft" qualities like kindness, compassion, and forgiveness. They are all equally qualities of the soul. What I particularly like about this book is that Bear Grylss seems to fully understand this as he does not just highlight the importance of guts and fortitude (as would be expected in such a book); he also highlights the importance of forgiveness and grace.

I find this very appealing for it is in the soft qualities that the hard qualities find completion and vice versa. This means that there is a wholeness in this book that would otherwise have been lacking. I see it, not only a book of remarkable stories, but also as a deeply spiritual book - and a very gusty one at that.

AWESOME book! But make sure you have the time set aside as it is VERY difficult to put it down!! I would recommend this book to anybody that loves a suspenseful read! As usual author Michael Crichton hit it right out of the park! The characters are very well described which makes it easy to love some and not so much love for others.

A great read.

If you enjoyed Dandelion Wine, you will also enjoy this book. What is really a collection of stories about the colinization of Mars, this books is extremely emotional. Some parts are vague and confusing, and I don't recommend this for a enjoyable light read, but a great literary achievement like most of Bradbury's other works.

The silver locusts

First published as The Silver Locusts, later renamed The Martian Chronicles after a TV series of that name was made.
This is a collection of short stories about a fleet of locust-like spaceships leaving Earth to settle Mars. In this world the Martian air is just about breathable but thin, and the first astronauts find abandoned city after city with water rippling through canals. They start to see ghosts and gradually we find that there are some living Martians, though perhaps they live only as memories.
But Earth is too crowded and people come to settle, bringing juke joints, small homes and beauty parlours - recreating small town America which was Bradbury's home. In one story, the war on Earth escalates and strangely most Mars settlers think they should return - not a great idea when war means nuclear war. A young man left alone decides to find a young woman if one is left, and rings every beauty parlour until he finds one. (This female would have been out securing food.) But his idea doesn't seem so great after a while and he leaves her, stumbling onto a couple of females who are actually androids built by a nutty professor, not that he knows that.
Other stories such as Billion Year Picnic at the end tell of a family exploring Mars looking for a city to settle in, knowing that now there is no going back to a devastated Earth and they have become the Martians for real.
One or two of Bradbury's stories were omitted from the collection, such as the tale of the ship full of coloured people who left homes in America for a better future, but most of them are more social comment than hard science, a warning that the future of humanity may depend on our ability to leave this planet and a query as to what we will bring and build.
Because this was never hard SF it has not dated, so read it as a fantasy or allegory and enjoy.
