"The Old Blood"

What a superb way to end the Kaywana Trilogy! As in the two previous installments, the story of the van Groenwegel clan is interwoven with the history of British Guiana, this time from 1795 to 1953. This novel was published as "Kaywana Blood" in the UK, although according to Edgar Mittelholzer himself: "the true title, of course, is The Old Blood."
Dirk van Groenwegel is Hendrikje's great-great-grandson and grandnephew of Hubertus. He is one of the strong ones, and it is the old blood the driving force that moves Dirk to make the van Groenwegels the most powerful family of Guiana. Dirk is also obsessed with keeping the family blood white at all costs. However, everything seems on its way to reach the top of the pinnacles until Rose, the illegitimate daughter of Hubertus with a slave, threatens to ruin his plans.
Of the three installments, "The Old Blood" is the novel that I enjoyed the most. It is more balanced than the previous two in terms of character and plot development. "Children of Kaywana", where Hendrikje is the main character, is an epic novel, but she can be a little too extravagant to be realistic. "The Harrowing of Hubertus" is a philosophical novel, but Hubertus is so preachy that you cannot help seeing him as a mouthpiece for Edgar Mitteholzer to voice his ideas about sex and religion. "The Old Blood" is more than a love triangle, and Dirk is a multidimensional character whom you hate to love and love to hate. Yes, Dirk can be racist, chauvinist, classist and homophobic, but I have always been a fan of antiheroes because they also represent the human race.
The novel can be best summed up by Adrian, Dirk's son, when he explains a musical composition he has written to both his father and sister, Mary:
"It's loose in form... but there are two twin themes, the one sad, the other gay. One is symbolic of the strong and the other of the weak, and they keep intermingling and - and warring with each other, if you see what I mean... and eventually the strong one takes command near the middle of the piece, and the other one seems as if it's going to die away, but suddenly it comes back into its own, and another warring takes place. Then towards the end you hear them both interlaced, and both are being resolved in a perdendosi... a gradual fading out."
Will the Kaywana Trilogy ever be put back into print? It is definitely one of Edgar Mittelholzer's greatest achievements as a writer, and it is a shame to see it "perdendosi" decade after decade after its publication in the 1950's.

Kaywana Blood by Edgar MIttelholzer

I was able to obtain ACE first edition paperback 1960. This book has been out of print since the late '60s. Although the book has been used, it was still in good condition.
The pages have begun to become yellow with age, but the binding hasn't come apart even though I'm almost at the end of the novel.
'Kaywana Blood' is the part of the trilogy of the Kaywana series. Anyone interested in the early history of British Guiana will be happy to read this and other Mittelholzer novels.
Even though the characters are ficional, the dates and facts are accurate. I'm thoroughly enjoying it.
