Puts Modern Seamstresses to Shame!

I have begun teaching myself to sew, but considering how mechanically-inclined I am NOT, I decided that I would teach myself to hand sew. People sewed by hand for centuries, right? And they often wore those big, puffy gowns with all of the fancy embroidery and everything. So why can't I make some comparatively simple clothes by hand, myself, even if it is 2013? I bought the book "Sew What! Skirts: 16 Simple Styles You Can Make With Fabulous Fabrics" recently and realized, Hey! I need to master a few more hand-sewing techniques before I'll be really comfortable working on a project bigger than a knee-length pencil skirt.
So I hunted around Amazon and finally purchased this book, a reprint of a school primer from 1893, with the hopes that it would teach me all the basics and leave me a very competent hand-seamstress. (Why it came with some weird alchemy advertisement with a website on the front page, I don't know; I ripped that out.) Well, as I'm working my way through my second pencil skirt, I'm also working my way through this book. It's really a great tutorial, if you can manage to understand the numbered steps and their descriptions. Even with pictures, certain techniques sit in my brain somewhere for a few days before I get that lovely "Aha!" moment. For instance, I finally figured out what they want me to do to stitch properly, but I am quite certain my METHOD is still incorrect, even if the EFFECT garnered is the same. (I may just leave it at that, an incorrect style, all things considered. My skirt's looking great!)
Yet after the chapters on basic sewing techniques--stitching, hemming, running (what's that for? I'm still not certain)--the book becomes infinitely more complex in what it attempts to teach the student. Honeycombing (WOW!), button holes created in various ways, darning stockings, shirring, and other talents that seem otherwise lost in this modern era were apparently child's play to those patient seamstresses of a century+ ago. At the back of the book it has a few paragraphs on working with patterns, too.
Don't expect the book to be perfect: in some places the print is missing, probably due to age in the original source material, and also without an instructor some of the directions are a bit confusing (as I've mentioned previously). However, after paging through the entirety of this book, I can't help but feel that we're all dumb and lazy in this modern era, with everything automated and done for us in two seconds' worth of time. It might take a while, but if I can become even a smidgen as capable as those little girls who used this sewing primer decades and decades ago, I'll be very happy!
