I was in great suffering when I read this book. It was a life saver for me. I loved the compassion of this man as he ministered to what others may consider low life's of society. He saw their worth and helped them in the hideous disease of leprosy. One thing the book helped me with was how one can be distracted from pain. I think everyone should read this book.

from pain this book can be invaluable.
I am neither a doctor, nor suffering from pain, but I thoroughly
enjoyed the autobiography of this surgeon.

Please buy for yourself, your family and give to every person going into medicine /dentistry/all branches of healthcare...had the privilege of spending a week with Dr. Brand at Mississippi Methodist Rehab Hospital 21 years ago and his book literally turned my view of pain, suffering, the human condition and community on its head. Other than the Bible, honestly, this book is the second most life-changing book I have ever read.
