A prize-winning murder mystery novel in which two boy detectives solve a crime in 1960s Brazil—a coming of age tale reminiscent of Niccolo Ammaniti's I'm Not Scared, Stand By Me, and To Kill a Mockingbird
If I close my eyes now, I can still feel her blood on my fingers. If only I had closed my eyes then, or kept my mouth shut, not told anyone about our discovery by the swimming hole, we could have gone back to dreaming about spaceships.
A horrifying discovery by two young boys while playing in a mango plantation marks the end of their childhood. As they finally open their eyes to the adult world, they see a place where storybook heroes don't exist, but villains and lies do. A bestseller in Brazil, this nostalgic murder mystery evokes the special nature of childhood friendships while painting a picture of a fascinating country.

Review
"Silvestre has fun with the murder mystery, but his real subject is Brazil, 'a country capable of advancing 50 years in only five of full democracy,' as it lurches out of the developing world." —Guardian
"A whodunit and a coming-of-age novel set in a small town in Brazil . . . remarkable." —Financial Times

Two boys cemented together through time by the events of one sunny day...
By Cheryl M-M
This was an unexpected suprise, a pleasant one I might add.
It isn't just a story of murder, deception, abuse, lies and corruption. It is also about the strong bonds of friendship between two young boys and how their bond remains like an uncut hidden cord over the length of time.
Intertwined between the events that unfold is the political history of Brazil. The author lets it stream seamlessly without letting any indication of political agenda overshadow the plot.
Anyone who knows a little of the 20th century machinations and connections of that country and era will be aware that it isn't without contention. It does cast a shadow upon the country, one that lingers even today.
Then we have the old man the two boys more or less harass into listening to them. He plays a pivotal part in discovering the awful truth.
The ending was, well let's just say it made my heart weep and I can't say why, because it would spoil it for others.
Just one thing though the fate of one of the main characters remains unanswered and although I can imagine what happened (probably what the author intended) my inner detective would really like to know.
It is hard to describe just exactly what made this book such an outstanding read, maybe it was the combination of the right elements. Perhaps it is just simply the fact Silvestre is a very talented storyteller.
In the end it doesn't matter why my inner bookworm is just glad I read it and so am I.
I don't often recommend books, but I think this is a little gem that many might just discover and enjoy.

Innocence to Experience
By gerardpeter
12 April 1961. Yuri Gagarin is rocketed into space. He gazes down on earth. We can take this as a metaphor for the novel.
The writer looks down on Brasil on the same day. Two schoolboys truant school to mess around on a lake, a tyre for a boat. Boyhood dreams. They stumble on a body, the mutilated body of a girl. Their journey into adulthood is as rapidly accelerated as the cosmonaut’s rocket.
Brasil was then – like Gagarin – accelerating away from the Third World. It was just a democracy – not for long – but still very corrupt. The poor were not served at the table of justice, the dead girl was “a corpse of no importance”.
The novel follows their investigations, both naive and shrewd, in the face of this official indifference. They are joined by a resident of a senior citizen’s home. This is a well-paced detective story. Three appealing characters – Paolo, his friend Eduardo and Uribatan, the retiree.
The relationship between the boys and the old man is convincing and charming. Uribatan acts as a mentor and a guide, and not just to solving the case. We see how their understanding of themselves and the world around them changes. Uribatan hastens their development by sneaking them into the cinema to see La Dolce Vita. He shields them though from the depravity that led to the woman’s murder.
A wistful epilogue ties up some of the loose ends. The author shows too what happened to the dreams of the boys on April 12 1961. There is just a touch of magic realism.
This many-layered novel works on all planes. Political but not too heavy or obscure. Charming characterization and characters. A good “thriller” – as the mystery unravels you need to read carefully. He portrays adolescence convincingly and warmly. Finally a tale of friendship.

AAn Original Thriller
By Robin Webster
Set in Brazil in 1961: ‘If I Close My Eyes’ opens with two twelve year old boys finding the mutilated body of a young woman by a lake they had been swimming in. The woman’s much older husband is charged with the murder. However, there are things about the murder that don’t add up and the boys start to question whether the husband is the real murderer and start their own investigation. They soon team up with an old man from a rundown old people’s home run by the Catholic Church. This is an easy to read and well written crime thriller. The story not only highlights the affect such a gruesome discovery would have on a twelve year old boy, it takes you through a world of corruption and vice and the low value placed on the lives of the poverty stricken classes of Brazil in the early 1960’s. A very enjoyable whodunit and a must for those who like original thrillers.
