MEGA HIT!

This book was and actually still IS, a MEGA HIT! I remember a couple of months ago my twitter feed being clogged with pictures of people reading this book and tweets re how awesome this book is. So, thanks to the fantastic guys from Transworld I got a review copy via NetGalley and owe them BIG time! Because, truly this book was such an enjoying, warm, fantastic read. Could it be because it’s written by two authors and is a product of the synergy between their excellent writing skills? I guess, that could be the answer, but let’s not overthink this matter, for only one thing is important – The Best Thing That Never Happened To Me is probably one of the best things that happened to me lately. Ha! (see what I did there?)
This is a fantastic story everyone can connect to, everyone that loves/d, everyone that has/d a best friend from the opposite sex, everyone that believes in true love and friendship. I always have been a huge fan of books or movies about high school sweethearts, or of friends who secretly wished they were more than just friends. Well, in this book I got it all, and I was so so sad when I finished reading it.
Holly and Alex know each other for what seems to be forever. They grew up together and were always there for each other. But, they eventually go separate ways unaware of their feelings, or better to say maybe fearing acknowledging their feelings for each other. It’s been looong time, 11 years have passed and they have their lives on track, each of them making something out of their lives. But, seems something in their life is lacking…you know, that part we all call the other half?
They are about to find out if what they felt for each other back in the days was real, and if it’s still alive. Oh my God, seriously guys, there are no words to explain how sweet and warm this story was. It’s told from both Holly’s and Alex’s POV and the switching between POVs is done brilliantly. There’s no gap whatsoever between Holly’s and Alex’s actions, thoughts or feelings. I absolutely loved hearing both of their sides and reading about their feelings, they just felt so real and maybe that’s the main reason why I loved this book. It felt like both of these MCs popped out of the pages and I could see them standing in front of me. They didn’t feel like fiction at all! I applaud to both Laura and Jimmy for the lovely dialogues, the banter between Holly and Alex which made this book such an enjoyable read.
Alex and Holly were wonderfully portrayed and their story is definitely one that will live with me for a long time. I’m not sure if there’s a sequel coming or if Laura and Jimmy are working on another book, however I’m sure that one DOESN’T change a winning team! It’s obvious that they make a great team, each adding with their writing style. I truly hope I’ll be able to read another one from them any time soon.

The Best Thing That Never Happened to Me by Laura Tait and Jimmy Rice

This was a wonderful story about first love, written from the viewpoint of both of the protagonists, in alternating chapters. This made for an interesting perspective as the reader, since we could experience the inner most thoughts of each character, and knew what was going on in the mind of both, rather than being limited to the external actions and words of the other, as the characters were.
I really liked this narrative approach, although at times I did find the characters frustrating, knowing that things could be so different, if just one of them was able to show some courage and take a risk. They both had a fear of admitting their true feelings for one another. In spite of a dearth of evidence that the other liked them, they had that fear of ruining a friendship.
The writing was relaxed and funny, making it a very enjoyable read. It was well paced, in the present, with flashbacks to earlier days providing good back story that explained the characters thoughts and actions in the present. I was constantly wanting to know what happened next, and what new thing could get in the way. What would be the next misunderstanding or misconception that would crop up meaning that despite them each wanting to be with the other, they would assume the other didn’t want them.
The characters and plot were very believable as presented by the two authors. The dialogue was also very straightforward and down to earth. You could feel the rapport between Alex and Holly, something that wasn’t evident in their interactions with their current partners. It was interesting to see the type of relationships that both had pursued in the period they had been out of contact, and also their current partners.
I found it easy to like the protagonists and invest in them and their lives, willing them on. It was fascinating looking at how they had changed based upon their flawed belief of a situation years past, and also how when they reconnected how easily they fell into the old way of behaving and thinking around each other.
I really wanted this book to go on longer, which I often feel is an indication of a good story and/or characters. I wanted to know what happened next, even though the story didn’t feel incomplete in any way, or unfinished.
I would certainly recommend book this to anyone that is a fan of the romcom, and wants an easy to read story, filled with humour, and great, believable characters.

I was looking forward to this book, but on reading it seemed to drag on slowly. I liked the characters of Alex and Holly, and the story is told in alternating POV, slipping back from present day to ten years previously when they were best friends, each wanting more but too nervous to take that first step and then a huge misunderstanding means they go their separate ways and lose contact.
Its well written, everything from the plot to the characters is realistic, it feels like something that could happen in real life...and maybe that's my problem, I need the dramatics and fire that rarely happens in reality, and this was a beautiful but very slow build up. I felt like I was waiting until the very end for something to actually happen. Though I enjoyed reading about their past and present problems, and seeing once again how easy it is for lovers to get separated over tiny misunderstandings, I needed more action, more highs and lows, more laughs and tears than was in this story. Thankfully not everyone does so if you're looking for a well written, gentle romance, with a few chaste kisses as the main action this is one for you. Just not for me :(
