The Butterfly Club, by Jacqueline Wilson

The exciting new story from one of the UK's best-loved authors.
Tina is a triplet, but she's always been the odd one out. Her sisters Phil and Maddie are bigger and stronger and better at just about everything. Luckily, they look after teeny-tiny Tina wherever they go -- but when the girls start in scary, super-strict Miss Lovejoy's class, they're split up, and Tina has to fend for herself for the first time.
Tina is horrified when she's paired up with angry bully Selma, who nobody wants to be friends with. But when Miss Lovejoy asks them to help her create a butterfly garden in the school playground, Tina discovers she doesn't always need her sisters -- and that there's a lot more to Selma than first meets the eye.
A beautiful, heartwarming story about friendship, confidence and becoming your own person, from the mega-bestselling author of Tracy Beaker, Hetty Feather and Sleepovers.

From School Library Journal
Gr 2–5—At first Tina the triplet seems an unlikely heroine; since she has been sickly and is much smaller than her sisters, she is sheltered by her overprotective mother and she depends on family to protect her. Then the girls' strict new teacher, Miss Lovejoy, insists on making Tina survive on her own, even forcing her to sit next to Selma the bully, who picks on her terribly! When Tina reveals her love of butterflies, Miss Lovejoy pairs her with Selma to build a school butterfly garden. As they dig, raise funds for supplies, and learn about each other, an understanding and friendship blooms. Madeleine Leslay reads with enthusiasm and expression, and although hers is not the voice of a seven-year-old, she does create a cast of characters with unique inflections. The story might appeal to very young listeners, but the British terminology may be a bit confusing. The audio includes facts about butterflies and gardens at the end, but the book's fun illustrations and recipe are missed. VERDICT Anyone with siblings will enjoy the sisters' interactions, and all will appreciate the fun butterfly and gardening facts and will benefit from the subtle but powerful message. Recommended.—MaryAnn Karre, Binghamton, NY

Finding your own voice and talents; familiar territory with a new spin from one of the UK's greatest authors for children.
By A. I. McCulloch
Jacqueline Wilson is one of the UK's foremost children's writers and has been made a Dame of the British Empire for her contribution to children's literature and reading in schools. Her books have won numerous awards in the UK and several have been adapted for television, notably Tracey Beaker.

The Butterfly Club is another excellent Jacqueline Wilson book, this time on the theme of finding your own voice and standing on your own two feet. It was bought as a present for a ten year old JW fan, and having enjoyed the Jacqueline Wilson stories that my grand-daughter read a few years ago, I thought I'd sneak a look.

It's up there as a fine example of the author's ability to deal very competently with issues that really concern children.
Gaining independence and a sense of self worth when you are a shy, small, under-achiever is a well-worn theme in children's literature, and particularly the device of having competent siblings who make an less able child feel incompetent, with a bully hovering around for good measure.

However, Jacqueline Wilson puts her own spin on things as ever. Tina is unable to engage in sporty activities due to heart problems , so that familiar angle of under-achiever redemption is closed off. Instead, there is a flower garden to be established with the aim of bringing butterflies to visit - hence The Butterfly Club.
There's plenty of accurate information woven in to the story and as 'extras' for budding naturalists to enjoy, but as so often the key focus is on dealing with issues at school and home. The extension activities to the story are, as always, well written and worthwhile. A top read for children of 8 -11.

FAB!
By Orchard Book Club
Review oh behalf of Orchard Book Club Mini Reviewers.

The Butterfly Club is a really good book and a really good story on making new friends. With some nice and mean characters. It is a really good animal story too with lots of illustrations. But will small Tina be able to cope with mean Selma and Kay-Leigh, will Mrs Lovejoy easy down on Tina or will she just have to fend for herself for the next year.

My personal favourite part is when Bully Selma takes a rough turn, will it stay permanently that way. Another part is when her Mum gets a bit worried about the beginning of the Butterfly garden, will Tina and Selma be able to raise enough money to get all the flowers for there garden? What will happen to all there hard work… One sad part is when Tina’s sisters Philippa and Madeline will not except Selma as part of their life. Tina`s just about to give up all her hope on the butterfly garden when the first one appears but will Tina still carry on believing that more Butterflies will come or shall she just give up! Find out in this brilliant book.

Finally a big thanks to Jacqueline Wilson the author of this brilliant book, also congratulations seen as The Butterfly Club is your 101st book and another big thanks to Nick Sharrett the illustrator of this brilliant book.
