There's no such thing as easy money. As surgeon Edward Hammond is about to find out. Thirteen years ago he performed a life saving operation on a Serbian gangster, Dragan Gazi. Gazi is now standing trial for war crimes in the international court in The Hague. After his life was saved, his men went on to slaughter thousands in the Balkan civil wars.

Now Gazi's family want more from him: in exchange for keeping Hammond's dirty little secret, they want him to find for them the man who holds the key to all the money Gazi squirreled away before he was locked up. But Italian financier, Marco Piravani, doesn't want to be found, not by Hammond, not by anyone. No sooner has Hammond tracked him down, than Piravani has disappeared again.

His pursuit will take him first to the Hague, and then to Milan to find the Italian, and then finally back to the scene of his crime, Belgrade, where he must confront the decisions he once so easily took. Only then will he be able to lay the past to rest.

Review
"As always, Goddard delivers a thoughtful and fast-moving tale with well-drawn characters" Irish Independent "The grubby supporting characters are vivid, the plotting is ingenious" The Sunday Times "Robert Goddard is a very accomplished writer and this, his twenty-second novel, is as good as any I have read" Avanti Magazine "Goddard's signature twists and turns, his clever plotting and the rising tension make this a page-turner thriller" Choice "The twists, turns and triple crosses will have you hooked... a truly manipulative storyteller" Peterborough Evening Telegraph

About the Author
ROBERT GODDARD was born in Hampshire and read History at Cambridge. His first novel, Past Caring, was an instant bestseller. Good, but not his best
By Expat Bookworm
Unlike most of Robert Goddard's novels that stride the present and the sometimes distant past, this novel is highly contemporary. Anyone, and I imagine that is most people, who watched the news on TV over the past few years, will be familiar with the Balken crisis and the trials that took place, and are taking place, at the UN International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in the Hague. While Robert Goddard's novel will not necessarily deepen this knowledge, it is an appropriate and valid setting for his new novel. As usual, the story is fast-paced, with possibly a couple of twists too many, but I read it in one go so did not lose the thread. I rewrote the ending in my head since it seemed to me that Robert Goddard had run out of time, space or inspiration. A better, "rounding up" ending would have encouraged me to give the book four instead of three stars. All in all, a good, exciting read, but certainly not one of the author's best!

Ridiculous plot
By Edwards_CSG
First, let me admit that I only got one-third the way into the story before I gave up. The basic plot is that a British surgeon who did a liver transplant for a Serb war criminal 13 years before is being blackmailed by the criminal's daughter. Strange, but hold on. So what does she have on the surgeon to blackmail him: It seem, unknown to the surgeon, the criminal had the surgeon's wife murdered. Sure the wife was trying to divorce him at the time, but we are told that he still misses and loves her. We are suppose to believe that the surgeon is more concerned about his reputation than revenge on the family which murdered his beloved. Okay it gets more ridiculous. What is the payoff the daughter demands? She wants the surgeon to contact her father's accountant to have him move the family fortune to a Cayman island bank. I know you are suppose to suspend rationale belief when reading fiction, but this story lacks coherence. I suppose if you think it is enjoyable to reads about a web of lies, then this is the book for you.

Very dull
By Dr Bo Abrahamsen
I really enjoyed Robert Goddard's earlier books, especially those with historical themes. The later ones seem to aim for John LeCarré readers but end up seeming at the same time dull and implausible. You can't go wrong with his first books, though. It found Blood Count immensely boring and had difficulties mustering the energy to finish it.
