A Rare Story Indeed

Usually, I read books quickly. Rare is the one that makes me slow down and savor the story. The Book Thief, by Markus Zusak, is one of those rarities.
This story of a young girl, Liesel Meminger, in Nazi Germany during the Second World War is composed of compelling characters the reader lingers over and strong writing.
Liesel steals books. The first is at her brother’s funeral when she steals a gravedigger’s handbook. Later she steals from the bonfires used by the Nazis to burn books. She also steals from the personal library of the mayor and his wife. The author provides a delightful twist to this last plot line which I won’t spoil here. Her foster father uses these treasured books to teach her to read.
Liesel grows up physically, psychologically, and emotionally as she experiences courage, friendship, love, survival, death, and grief. And we follow her from her brother’s death and her placement in a foster home through fearing and then loving her foster parents. Through her eyes we see the brutal horror of Nazism.
And we see tender humanness as well. Her foster parents hide a Jew, and Liesel becomes a willing participant in keeping the secret, even from her best friend, Rudy.
We experience Liesel’s foster father, Hans, a gentle, mild-mannered, almost timid man, exhibit true courage and bravery. Not only does he hide a Jew, Max, but he intervenes to help one of the Jews who are periodically marched through the town at their way to the Dachau death camp. Hans is whipped for his efforts. Liesel later follows his example by giving bread to another group being force-marched through town.
When the danger gets too close, Max leaves. Throughout the remainder of the book, Liesel is searching for him in the groups of Jews paraded through the town. Searching for the man who, from his basement-hiding place, wrote and illustrated stories about her. Stories that will touch the reader as they touched her.
The magnificent story of Liesel is made even stronger by Zusak’s writing. The story is told by Death as a first person narrator. This allows great insight into all the characters, and pulls us into their hearts. Zusak spins words to create descriptions and images that stay with you and reveal the people and the world of Nazi Germany. He gives that world a life that’s missing from the history books.
I found myself re-reading passages. Not because I was lost or confused. But to cherish and enjoy the writing and to relive the moment of reading it.
A rare book indeed—one that will pierce the heart and stay with the reader long after other stories have faded away.

Okay, so the first time I read this book when I was in fourth grade. I didn't really understand it, but I did understand part of the concept of the Holocaust. This year, going into Honors English, this was one of the books on the reading list. I started reading it as a library book, and I decided that the library version wasn't worth it, so I purchased the kindle edition.

The first chapters were hooking. The first time I read this, I was unaware that it was told by Death, so as I reread it, it made more sense. I didn't remember much of it from the first time I read it, but as I began to delve further into "The Book Thief", I began to remember the characters.

Lielsel Memminger was such an amazing character. As the book develops, her character's personality begins to to bloom. The other characters that she meets begin to bloom in the same way, and soon enough, you have a whole garden of characters with gorgeous personalities.

As soon as I met Max, I fell in love. His character began as somewhat broken, but still glowing from the inside. As he and Liesel became friends, that hopeful glow helped both him and Liesel grow as characters.

But, as I neared the end of the book, I began to realize something: when you're in a garden, you don't pick the ugly flowers. You pick the most beautiful.

Rudy Steiner: Liesel's best friend and neighbor. The moment Liesel realizes he's died in the bombing on Himmel Street is the same moment that she realizes that she was in love with him.

Next, it was Mama and Papa. This had a major emotional impact on me, being that my father also passed away. Liesel had loved Papa, her adoptive father, as a real dad. And despite Mama's flaws, Liesel still loved her, even if she wasn't her real mother. I took a moment to imagine that: Liesel had grown up without a father, and shortly after had her brother torn away from her. Then she found out that her biological mother had been also. She's left with Mama and Papa, who, although they aren't her actual parents, she loves them as though they were. And, just to tie a big black bow of grief on Liesel's losses, her street is bombed, and both Mama and Papa die.

At the end of the book, Max and Liesel are reunited. We discover that she has gotten married, had children, and was given grandchildren by her children. We never find out who her husband was, or if Max gets to meet them, but I hope that he does.

I hope that Max found Liesel's book and published it. I hope he gave them to her children and grandchildren to know their grandmothers story.

Summer reading

The book I read was The Book Thief. Some aspects that I liked about this book is, the narrator is death. I liked it because most books do have a specific name or thing for their narrator. There are some aspects that I don’t like though.
The aspect that I don’t like is that the beginning is very confusing. This caused me to stray away from the book. This was bad because this book is my summer reading. This is one of the aspects that I don’t like. There are only a few aspects that I don’t like.
I would recommend this book to everyone. I think people who like enigmas would like it better. Another group of people who would like this book would be people who like books in 3rd person. I would not recommend this book as an in-school book.

Excellent book!

My wife brought me this book and it's an excellent read. It's up to date, having recent findings about Loch Ness Monster. It's very objective and in fact some bits are so interesting, you wish they were much longer. There is a great variety of topics not just obvious things like the Yeti, however there do seem to be some exclusions (probably due to keeping the book a reasonable length). Overall highly recommended.

This book is simply a wonderful asset in terms of defining everything unexplained from "Acronymics" to "Zagun, Eleonore," and everything in-between. There are hundreds of illustrations and more than 1,300 carefully researched entries that shed light on all of the delicious diverse and controversial subjects such as cryptozoology, folklore, fringe science, ghosts, UFO's, and witchcraft (among many others). Well done. Five stars without hesitation or reservation.

Stunning

As a college professor I have many books in my personal library. Yet out of the hundreds of books and texts that I own, I constantly recommend only a tiny percentage to my students as "must haves." The Chambers Thesaurus has become one of these essential works. It is well-organized, thorough, scholarly, and even fun to use. I have never found a thesaurus that is this practical and easy to use. Be forewarned, it is a serious volume and weighs quite a bit - but it's content justifies every ounce. Easily worth twice the price.

A very useful & detailed reference. Very impressive

Have always respected Chambers as the benchmark.
The latest is the most comprehensive analysis of the language we know..
PS- US Customs opened it & it was poorly repacked. In opening it I inadvertently dropped it from the already opened carton. There is a small bruise on one of the corners. There is some reason to complain to your customs for this clumsiness.

This is currently I go to thesaurus.I should note here that I have a working writer, so I use these kinds of word references literally all the time.

John O'Farrell is the author of seven books. His first book, Things Can Only Get Better, was a number one bestseller and was dramatized for BBC Radio 4. One of the funniest memoirs I have read

This book is a misery memoir of the highest order. The story of an activist who, galvanised into socialism as a young man in the late 70s, the very same period when the ideology was lurching around in its death throes, decided to devote his life to the Labour Party. John O'Farrell was no ambitious Blairite politico though. He fought his battles at the low end of the totem pole - trudging miles of godforsaken streets delivering leaflets, attending tedious meetings in grubby halls where left wing worthies tied themselves in knots with their own political correctness. All this could descend into a self righteous polemic. But the crucial, vital saving grace is the book's humour.

O'Farrell tells of the looks he gained in working class pubs by lunk headed Sun readers when he tentatively voiced his opposition to the Falkland's war. His guilty admission after the Brighton bomb that he wishes Thatcher had actually kopped it. The wishful, naive optimism on the eve of every general election only to wake up with a head pounding hangover and the Tories in power -again! The brutal asceticism and self-abnegation that prevented him from enjoying pretty much anything.

Nowadays, O'Farrell has done a New Labour type maturation himself - he lives a comfortable life as a metropolitan Guardian columnist and broadcaster. New Establishment as it were. But he can still laugh at the grim old days. The Conservatives might have won all the elections in the 1980s - but Labour trounced them at the humour polls. Very funny.

Essential therapy for anybody who supported the Labour Party through eighteen years the of Conservatives Ruling Britain. We feel that O'Farrell was right there with us as pre-election optimism dissolved into miserable failure again and again and again.
Over the years his radical edge is softened by age and cynicism. The vegetarian succumbs to the bacon sandwich. The dedicated capaigner pays the au pair to deliver his election leaflets. The words of the chant have changed - 'What do we want? A winter flowering clematis! When do we want it? Before we lay the patio!'
Is it similar changes which made the Labour Party electable again?
His description of the unforgettable election night of 1997 is the highlight. The defeat of Michael Portillo described as dramatically as the scoring of a winning goal in the Cup Final. Could we ever get?
But did things really get better?

If you don't laugh, you'd have to cry...

This book is hilarious. And so true. If you were an unhappy camper during the Thatcher years in the UK--or are filled with dread by the recent onset of unfettered Republican control in the US you should read this book. The author was a writer on the political satire show SPitting Image in the 1980s and boy does it show. Laugh out loud quality in many part and filled with so unspoken truths. Great stuff.

A Good Sequel - Well Thought Out and Executed

Just when I thought Stroud had outdone himself with the Bartimaeus series, especially books 3 and 4, here comes a great new series from him - Lockwood & Co. After The Screaming Staircase, The Whispering Skull doesn't disappoint. Thrills, chills, turns and twists galore.
We meet the steadily more famous Lockwood team, each showing the familiarity, as well as steady character development over the previous book, and through the current book. Intertwining the whispering skull from the last book with an intricate plot in this book, alongwith the co-opetition with Fittes Agency, and also DEPRAC, it makes a strong, cohesive plotline - never once boring or losing track.
All in all, a worth recommend to all lovers of fantasy - and looking forward to the next part of the series!

Fast-paced, Creepy, Brilliant! (even if you're an adult!)

Have you ever walked into a bookstore and bought a book you’ve never heard of by an author you’ve never come across, purely on the strength of a recommendation from the staff? That’s how I came across the first Lockwood & Co. book (The Screaming Staircase) – and I am so glad I did. I LOVED it so was over the moon to be sent the second instalment to review.

Imagine a cross between a teenage, modern day London-based Ghostbusters (without the cheese) and Harry Potter and you’ll have a vague idea of just how great these books are. They are marketed as YA but are just as much fun for adults.

The three main characters – Lockwood, Lucy and George make up the Lockwood ‘Ghost busting’ Agency. They provide a familiar (in a Harry Potter-esque way) dynamic which is full of humour and completely works. I like them all, from the dashing, ‘never breaks a sweat’ Anthony Lockwood, to the completely kickass, gutsy Lucy Carlyle (who I suspect fancies Lockwood just a little) to the rather unattractive but studious, clever and ever curious George Cubbins. They all have their strengths – both psychic and otherwise. Lockwood’s strength is Sight – he can see ghostly disturbances and manifestations before the other two. Lucy’s ‘Talent’ is in detecting aural phenomena and George specialises in the research of cases; trawling through dusty old manuscripts, visiting old libraries and archives as well as doing a considerable amount of tea-making and baking.

In the first book we followed Lucy through a series of interviews until she was ultimately hired by Lockwood and the three of them got into (and out of) all sorts of trouble. In this instalment, a year on and the three of them still live in Lockwood’s big old family home (not an adult in sight), getting into (and out of) all sorts of trouble.

In this world, only children and teenagers are sensitive enough to psychic phenomena to deal with ‘The Problem’ (the ‘ghostly epidemic that besets us’) and so are hired by agencies in order to find, and eradicate the source of their power. All of this is (supposedly) regulated by DEPRAC (Department of Psychical Research and Control), which is based at Scotland Yard and which I think of as the Lockwood version of a kind of Ministry of Magic.

This time around, the trouble involves a ‘whispering skull’ (in a jar, which communicates with scathing sarcasm and seriously winds up Lucy), lots of catacomb / churchyard / coffin based action, deadly artefacts that have been stolen and need to be found, lost manuscripts written in dead languages and of course, a fair smattering of pretty terrifying ghosts and spectres. There are rapiers, magnesium flares and salt bombs; spiders, rats and desiccated corpses. What’s not to like?

The story is creepy, fast paced and full of action - it absolutely gallops along with the action nicely interspersed with brief homely scenes usually involving copious amounts of tea, sandwiches and cake (baked by George of course).

Further intrigue (as well as lots of humour) is created by the presence of rival agency members – mainly those of the original, (in)famous Fittes Agency, ‘where psychic detection had been raised to an art-form’, particularly Quill Kipps (who we met in the first book). As Lucy tells us: 'Being diplomatic, I’d say Kipps was a slightly built young man in his early twenties, with close-cut reddish hair and a narrow, freckled face. Being undiplomatic (but more precise), I’d say he’s a pint-sized, pug-nosed, carrot-topped inadequate with a chip the size of Big Ben on his weedy shoulder. A sneer on legs. A malevolent buffoon. He’s too old to be any good with ghosts, but that doesn’t stop him wearing the blingiest rapier you’ll ever see, weighed down to the pommel with cheap paste jewels. Anyway, where was I? Kipps. He loathes Lockwood & Co. big time’.

I loved it just as much as the first book. The ending is brilliantly satisfying and sets things up wonderfully for Lockwood #3…

The right book

I've been looking for ways to deal with the fact that I didn't learn how to spell when I was a kid, and I've been looking for decades. I'm a bit unusual because I cracked the reading code when I was very young and was reading way above age level even before I got out of grade school. But the spelling fell aside, in part because of the way they taught spelling when I was a kid, or rather did not teach it.

Basically their method was to have you learn every word in the English language one word at a time. Reading was by see and say, a truly rotten method for anyone with a learning disability. I have dyslexia, so I have a learning disability.

This book was written for adults with dyslexia. It might work for adults in general, or at least I think so. I haven't actually done the program yet, but I've already learned a lot just reading the beginning material. I'll get to my own problem words in a few days. I'm already collecting them.

Some of the things they suggest are things I've done, but what makes this book special is that it is ORGANIZED. So far there have been no spelling rules, or almost none. I expect that I ought to locate a set of rules too. They might have done better if they had put a set of rules in the back of the book even though they don't really like teaching with them. But there is no question that, although it is not perfect, I've been actively looking for this book for 30 or 40 years, and here it is. Finally!

seems to be helping

My step son is dislexic and this book has been a tremendous help to him. Even though he had special classes at school, they basically taught him NOTHING - Thank you very much John Glenn High School in Michigan....thanks for nothing!!! Collect your government money for special ed. and then don't have it. he learned more from this book than he learned at your school in 4 years!!!

Coffee Table Book

Two stars might be a little harsh, but I barely flipped past the first few crafts mentioned. I was hoping for a bit more detail... it's really just too short. "Coffee table book" is really the best way to describe it; blurbs and lots of pictures. Nothing that you couldn't learn via Wikipedia... Actually, you would definitely learn MORE from Wikipedia.

I was amazed at how big this book is. I was expecting some little, almost pocket sized book with not much info, but got a wonderful hard-back guide to hundreds of lot crafts, most of them from my home country of the UK. While it does not go into massive step-by-step details of these crafts, it does give you ample information and an insight into a craft, hobby or pastime that you might want to delve further into. They expect this and do give you details of websites or particular bodies/groups to contact for more information.
A great guide with plenty of good pictures. Very enjoyable easy reading.

These crafts will definitely be lost

I got this book on a whim after talking about necessary skills post-apocalypse (silly, I know). I should have looked through it more before purchase, as this is more of a coffee table book, not a how-to. There's some very basic knowledge, but not enough to get anyone started on most of this. As the title suggests, these crafts are probably lost if this was the only book about how to do them. It's a tease!
