Review
"Engagingly recounted with both intelligence and candour...General Jackson is a man of high principles, who on more than one occasion was prepared to lay his career on the line to defend [his] beliefs. In this highly readable and fascinating book, he speaks a great deal of good sense. More importantly, he is able to publicly voice his concerns for the future and defend the soldiers he clearly cares about" -- James Holland Sunday Telegraph "Utterly compelling...Jackson has provided a model of the modern military commander, media friendly, internationally minded and politically sensitive...Indispensable reading" -- Andro Linklater The Spectator "Insightful and valuable...In his account of his career, he has exposed the weaknesses and failures that led to the challenges facing our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan today" -- Michael Evans The Times "A very readable, personal account of a man who rose to the top of the army and gained a reputation for being a 'no-nonsense' commander" -- Richard Norton-Taylor The Guardian "His trademark blunt honesty and humour are to the fore in his autobiography...He has a very interesting story to tell...An engaging and honest account that would repay reading by all those who seek to understand the 21st century British army" The Independent

Man Of Peace, Man Of War...
By DLD
First off: If you're looking for an action packed autobiography of a journeyman soldier wading knee-deep through decades of fire-fights, then this book isn't it. By his own admission, General Sir Mike Jackson never really experienced front-line combat in a theatre of war - something which he still regrets to this day. However, if you are looking for a fascinating insight into the rise to prominence of a career soldier through the ranks, as well as the internal machinery, of the British Army, then you won't find a finer or more accessibly written book.
General Sir Mike Jackson, may not have been a "bullets and bayonets" soldier, but he did have "boots on the ground" during some of the most infamous engagements in British military and UN history: He manned a garrison in West Berlin during the Cold War; was present during the "Bloody Sunday" and "Warrenpoint" incidents in Northern Ireland in the seventies and spent years in the notorious IRA `bandit country' of South Armagh; was privileged to an insider's view of military brinksmanship played out by the senior staff of the British Army during both the Falklands and Gulf War conflicts, and was an instrumental player in securing ceasefires, coordinating relief efforts and defusing territorial disputes in both the Bosnian and Kosovan conflicts (his account of NATO Chief Wesley Clark's apparent determination to square off against incumbent Russian forces on Pristina air-field is hair-raising).
His insights into why UN forces were able to secure a lasting peace despite the myriad religious and ethnic conflicts prevalent in Kosovo (and why coalition forces have been unable to do the same in largely similar circumstances in Iraq) are worth the price of purchase alone. To my mind, General Sir Mike's "Forging A Rope In 100 Days" theory - which states that it is imperative that a liberating army establish, at the very minimum, a semblance of social, judiciary , functional and political infrastructure and cohesion within a newly liberated country within 100 days of liberation in order to win over the indigenous population - should be taught at all levels of diplomacy. Indeed, his keenness of insight into the military, diplomatic and civilian mind would make him an exemplary politician - although one gets the impression given his evident (and commendable) disdain for spin doctoring, bureaucracy and glad-handing that General Sir Mike has no desire whatsoever to traverse the viper's nest of civilian politics.
A fascinating portrait of a man who had the privilege of watching much of modern history in the making, I recommend this book unreservedly.
