A compelling, frank and frightening memoir written entirely from his cell.
About the Author
JIMMY LERNER served in the US army in Panama before gaining an MBA, and worked for eighteen years as a marketing executive and planner for Pacific Bell. In 1998 he was convicted of voluntary manslaughter.. He was released on parole in January 02. This book was written entirely from his cell.

You talkn sideways outcha neck

This book is nothing short of amazing! I found it completely by accident. I was unemployed back in 02 and was spending a lot of time at the library to pass the idle time. I was reading mostly biographies and history at the time, but this book caught my eye for some reason and i'm glad it did. Jimmy Lerner has a way with words and dry wit that kept me laughing continually. Even though prison life is no laughing matter, he has a way of making it quite humorous. This book is not for the faint of heart, but what prison story is? If you dig'm dark and funny, this book is for you. There are some classic one liners as well.

don't believe the hype

i bought this book on the strength of the user reviews, and the fact that this book is supposedly a biography/true story of the author's time in prison.
ok, in places it's an engaging piece of writing, but as i read along, more and more holes in the (less and less believable) story popped up. anyone can tell that many of the characters are part truth and a big part fantasy, down to the full on 'cape fear'-styled pursuit at the end; it also seemed to me that the stories were probably enhanced a bit to make the author seem tougher or badder.
so i sure wasn't surprised to find in the author's foreward, an admission that his credibility was called into question in the years after the publication of the book, and all kinds of uncomfortable excuses and apologies as to how the 'emotional truth' gave him the permission to change not only events and characters, but also the factual truth.
hey, i'm sure he spent time in prison and there are some amusing stories about day-to-day prison life, but the credibility issue damages this as a 'memoir' and it's not otherwise really compelling; overall there's not much to take away from the book.

witty and full of wisdom

YOU GOT NOTHING COMING by Jimmy Lerner
This must be the best prison memoir I will ever come across. The story of this middle class man, in prison for manslaughter, is actually very funny and at times, 'laugh out loud' hilarious. I know this sounds very unlikely but the use of language and the imagery are original and stylish. At first I found it hard to take all the strong language but then got tuned into it, and used to it, which is just what would really happen in that environment. The writer has wit and wisdom but also portrays a very frightening and dangerous place which is often out of control.
I read the book so fast to find out what happened that I had to go back and re-read some parts to really appreciate the characters and the skill of this writer. The things said to have happened in the kitchen would be enough to keep me on the straight and narrow for ever.
The way the writer manages to make comparisons between the corporate training of his former life and the problem situations in prison is priceless. He tries to use his middle management skills in a totally hostile environment.
I found myself wishing for opportunities to use some of the phrases, e.g. the perfect understatement of `that aint nothin nice', or to accuse someone of 'talking out of the side of their neck', would be so satisfying. No problem in recommending this book, it is a great read.
