A Terrific High School Read

As a mother who screens everything her 12-year-old daughter reads, I've learnt that movies are usually not as well-materialised as the books they are based on. While very true in the case of "Lemonade Mouth" by Mark Peter Hughes, it was actually the movie that was probably more suited to the tween reading audience than the PG-on-to-PG-13 movie-watching audience. The book was actually better suited for PG-13-on-to-R movie-watchers, if they also like to read. Nevertheless, conservative as I am as a parent, said daughter does know something about what goes on in the world, so it was okay that she did read the book: it was not objectionable in terms of the message, more like the way the message was delivered. Even then, it wasn't an objectionable book in any way, other than it may be more mature than for those who enjoyed the movie. I enjoyed the book tremendously, but, like "The Chocolate Wars," by Robert Cormier (which was also made into a movie, but I haven't watched it myself), this is actually a high school book for high schoolers, not most middle schoolers who are strong readers.

"The members of Rhode Island's famous Lemonade Mouth band have been called all these things and more. Many have speculated over how this band came to be. But what really happened? How did five outcasts in Opequonsett High School's freshman class become this legendary band? Wen, Olivia, Mo, Charlie and Stella take us back to that fateful day, when five detentions, a broken ukulele, a rubber band and a cup of lemonade changed the course of rock-n-roll history and high school as we know it - forever.
"I think the `Lemonade Mouth' movie was better than the book. In the movie, Stella's hair isn't green, the characters don't use as many swear words, Charlie doesn't have his dead twin brother talking in his head and Wen isn't in love with his soon-to-be step mom. However, I liked how in the book, Mo doesn't go back to Scott but instead starts dating Charlie. Also, in the book, we actually get to meet Olivia's dad and we find out he's an okay guy.
"My favorite character was Charlie. Charlie is really funny and nice. Also, he tries to stand up for Olivia when some people start to bully her, even though they are way bigger than him and way cooler and stronger.
"I would give the book four stars: one star for the characters, one star for the plot, one star for the name of the band and one star for the really nice ending."
