About the Author
Mary Soames (1922-2014) was the youngest child of Winston and Clementine Churchill. She was brought up at Chartwell in Kent and, aged eighteen, joined the ATS and served in mixed anti-aircraft batteries in England and Europe. She accompanied her father as his ADC on several of his wartime overseas journeys. In 1945 she was awarded the MBE (military). In 1947, she married Captain Christopher Soames, Coldstream Guards, later Lord Soames, PC, GCMG, CH. In 1998 she edited the private correspondence between her parents, Speaking for Themselves, completely revised and updated the celebrated biography of her mother, Clementine Churchill, in 2002 and completed her own autobiography, A Daughter's Tale, in 2011.

A fascinating wide-lens perspective

I ended up importing this book from the UK and was very glad I did; Churchill especially reveals himself quite candidly in these letters to his wife, especially in his years out of government before WWII. Of particular interest to me were Clementine's roles and reactions to Churchill's political and military life, and what they suggest about womenof that time, class and place, etc. (Suffragettes were violent & violently handled protesters, eg) As someone who reads history partly as a way to frame with (I hope) some intelligence the events of today, this was a deeply interesting 1st person x2 account of Britain in 1st half of the century.

This book consists of letters written between Clementine Churchill and Winston Churchill. It is a book of love and family and absolutely wonderful. For those who can't get enough of Winston, this is a must!

I thoroughly enjoyed the book

Could it be that this very special couple got on so well because they were so often apart? It seems that Mrs. Churchill was very often not well.
However, I thoroughly enjoyed the book, and was pleased to read about such a lasting love affair by a married couple. Mrs. Soames did a good job in getting the letters down in a very interesting way. What really unique parents she had.
