I had this book years ago and looking through it now I remember every illustration, especially the four page fold-out illustrations by Pauline Ellison for the covers of the Earthsea Trilogy published by Bantam Books in '75...amazing!

In '76 David Larkin compiled around 48 great illustrations by fifteen artists, including a short bio on each:
Chris McEwan, Wayne Anderson, Tony Meeuwissen, Frank Bellamy, Nicola Bayley, Peter Le Vasseur, Pauline Ellison, Brian Froud, Alan Lee, Ian Miller, Reg Cartwright, James Marsh, Peter Barett, Owen Wood and Ken Laidlaw.

DOES TECHNOLOGY TRUELY KEEP AMERICA SAFE?

This was a truly exciting read. Brown created the same suspenseful mood that was present in the De Vinci Code and Inferno. The book was filled with all kinds of interesting information about technology that one finds hard to believe and how it might be used to create havoc and chaos, along with its pitfalls if we aren't very careful. The characters were fully developed and complex by the time the final shoe fell and as usual, there is always the forces of good and evil played out against a rich tapestry of history and intrigue. GREAT READ!

A bit of a disappointment

I have read all of Dan Brown's books and I have loved all of them except this one. If I had read this one first, I would have never read his other well written books. This read was full of endless repetitions. Incredibly irritating!! Now for the upside.....it has the interesting twists and turns that Dan Brown is known for and that is why I was able to finish this book.

A Dan Brown book....what more can I say. He is an awesome writer.. This is certainly a page turner although I didn't think it would be like his other books. Loved it. It was tough to put down but I did have to work and sleep at some point!!

An important lesson on the ill effects of good intentions

I bought this book some time ago and was prompted to read it gain as a result of a discussion I had had with a friend about some of the moral issues which had been raised during the recent Presidential election in the USA. When I observed that I thought that most of these positions were of reasonably recent origin (i.e. the past 300-400 years or so) , she questioned me about that. I told her that Peter de Rosa, in his book on the Papacy, had discussed in some considerable detail the history of the position of the Roman Catholic Church on moral issues such as abortion, marriage, birth control, divorce, homosexuality, and the family. Since it was, however, some time ago since I had read it , I thought another read of it was required in order for me to be sure of what he had written
I am not a member of the Roman Catholic Church, but do I respect its ability to use its moral and ethical authority for the good of the less fortunate in the world, particularly during the past few decades. How the Church managed to become the extraordinary organisation it is, having survived nearly 2000 years and still growing, is an interesting historical subject in itself, and so this book is just one of several I have read about the Papacy. One such is "Keeper of the Keys" by Nicolas Cheetham which is a somewhat benign history of the Bishops of Rome and the Papacy from the earliest times, but which focuses more on the actions of the Holy Fathers rather than on their position on moral questions.
Whether this is the best book to read about such matters is another question, since its subtitle "The Dark Side of the Papacy" makes it clear that this is going to focus on the sins rather than the achievements of the Roman Catholic Church. But it's a book I have and from my earlier read of it I knew that what Peter de Rosa, (a former Priest, and a former University Professor and College Dean), has written about the historical background of the Church is certainly consistent with that of Cheetham,, and other books I have read. And, so even though he has since left the priesthood, I am prepared to believe that his qualifications and experience are sufficient for one to be confident that he knows his subject well, .
The book is polemical and, unsurprisingly focuses on the misdeeds, mistakes, misjudgements, and inconsistencies of the Church leaders, so it is definitely a bit of gloomy book. One reviewer gave it the one-line label as "A binful of garbage", but I am not sure whether this was a snappy one-liner or whether the reviewer actually explained why he felt the need to dismiss it in that way. Other reviewers were considerably kinder, but it's not clear to me how representative they might be.
Be that as it may, this book is well written, very interesting, and very informative. It is a chilling indictment of the record of the Holy Fathers for the past 1000 years, showing them to be frequently less than Christian in their behaviour, frequently self serving, decidedly inconsistent, and certainly not a terribly good example to the lesser beings of this world. This is certainly not to say that the record of secular monarchs of this period is any better, so perhaps they were simply just men of their times. This book therefore is probably not for the devout Christian, unless they feel a need to know about the past history of the Church and how it got to where it is today.
Part One of the book, entitled "Power", describes why and how the church gained its temporal power, how it first used that power to control the rapacity and sheer greed of the monarchs of the High Mediaeval Period, and how sadly, it started to be corrupted by the temporal power it had gained at the expense of those kings. The incredible cruelty of the Crusades and of the Holy Inquisition on the one hand, and the self indulgent, self serving behaviour of the princes of the Church on the other, is perhaps little different from the standards of the times. Part Two entitled "Truth" describes how the Church reacted to the various challenges to its power particularly after the reality of the Renaissance had begun to sink in, and the methods which the church leaders used in order to hang on to their power. Part Three entitled "Love" discusses the development of the Church's doctrine on the moral questions which I listed above.

Did I get the answers I was seeking? Yes, and this book definitely provides a thorough explanation. It's rather a pity that it has been condemned because of its critical exposure of such a revered institution. Perhaps it would have been better to provide some kind of balance by contrasting the misdeeds with the positive record of the Church over these centuries, and this is the reason I am giving it four rather than five stars. Nevertheless it will remain on my bookshelf, and there is no doubt that I will find the need to consult it again from time to time.

An Opening of the Eye Regarding the Papacy

Here Mr. De Rosa gives the background into the dark side of the papacy throughout the centuries even into the 20th century. Too many times in the past writers and religious types have covered up and denied the negative side of the human condition found in the Roman church and its popes. De Rosa opens "the can of worms" and "airs the dirty laundry." Nothing is perfection as for certuries select writers have tended to exaggerate the glory of the all-too- human popes complete with numerous sick vices including murdering of one another and really disgusting sexual and sinful actions. A highly recommended book but not for the "faint of heart."
Well-written with all the necessary research needed to support De Rosa's statements and arguments. Traditionalists will be totally shocked over the openiness and truthfulness writing style of this writer. This is one reason why this book is refreshing in its canididness.

Good points, it's very thorough with tons of information about Catholicism you never dreamed of.Bad points -- it written in a secular matter and needs to be more in a Christian point of view.Some stuff I looked up on the net and it either was'ant there or wrong.Not one bible verse that I remember being used.Didnt know most of the info though including peters statue being worn away by people kissing it, but that's not worship ???

My emotions are still all over the place and I know I just can't write a review good enough to do justice to this story

What is the cost of the true behind a lie?
What is the cost of the secret that's hiding the true?
If you ask me what was it I expected when going into this story, I probably wouldn't know what to tell you. But I can tell you one thing: I know I got more then I expected.
This story, written in the first person and taking place in 1960th, follows a young woman named Amy. She finds herself in a small Somerset village, taking care of a little girl named Viviane who recently lost her father. It is not an unfamiliar fact that Viviane likes to have imaginary friends. After their arrival, Viviane can't stop talking about her new friend, Caroline, who has the same name as Viviane's mother's sister who died 30 years ago. Not only that she has the same name, but she also knows things from Caroline's life that no one else but Viviane's mother would know, and she never talks about Caroline. Suddenly, strange things start to happen in the house and Amy can't help but wonder if Caroline is real.
This book took me by surprise. After finishing it, I needed some time to think about it, to sleep and clear my mind. My emotions are still all over the place and I know I just can't write a review good enough to do justice to this story.
The writing style is amazing and it is full of visuals. I couldn't help but imagine shadows of gray covering pictures in my head, playing a movie that gave me chills and kept me on the edge because I didn't know what will come from the story.
It was like watching The Ring, only different. The atmosphere was similar, but the plot, characters and message were different.
The message. It is the most precious thing about this novel. If I tell you what it is, I would spoil your potential reading experiance, so i won't.
But I will tell you this: If you have a chance, give this book a chance.
If you do that, I guarantee you that it will keep you awake, it will make you think about monsters, but not the paranormal ones. The real monsters that live among us and can destroy many lives. It is our responsibility to stop them.

A wonderful, unsettling novel

This was such an intriguing read. You could really feel the intensity of the house, it gave me the heebie jeebies as I was reading (I had to take breaks, even though I desperately wanted to know what was going to happen!) I can handle being creeped out when I expect it, but I wasn’t with this one, and it was so unsettling.

The circumstances that Julia and Viviane find themselves in are quite sad. Imagine having your world turned upside down in an instant and having to leave everything you knew behind? Viviane held the plot together, with her imaginary friend named Caroline – which also happens to be the same name as Julia’s sister who passed away many years before. Coincidence? Amy would like to think so, but all the same she tries to find out as much about the real Caroline as she can. Which proves a little difficult, as no one wants to talk about what happened back then.

Amy was such a great main character. She desperately wants what’s best for her friends and will do anything she can to help them, no matter how little she has to give. You get the feeling that if she hadn’t been there, they would have completely fallen apart.

This is a novel about relationships, friendships and lies. Everything felt urgent and the pacing was great. As the house seemed to revolt against them, the need for answers grew. It was such a story that was unravelled, parts of it were disturbing and there’s some things that make for uncomfortable reading; but it’s well worth it.

The only thing that I didn’t really like about The Secret by the Lake was the romance. It felt a bit immediate and I didn’t really get it at first, but it ended up being quite sweet (and furthered the plot!)

This story was just so atmospheric. I can’t even explain what it was like to read it and be sucked into this world. Louise Douglas has done a brilliant job with it, and I’m looking forward to reading more of her books!

A wonderful, unsettling novel. Family secrets are laid bare, and it’s not for the faint hearted. I really, really recommend this if you like to be kept on the edge of your seat with anticipation!

Haunting - and wonderful

I’ll admit that I’m not usually keen on ghost stories - it’s the curse of an over-active imagination I think, the fact that they disturb me so much and keep me awake at night. Although it’s partly fair to call this a ghost story, I think I’d prefer to call it simply haunting - as things began to go bump in the night I simply couldn’t stop reading because it was such a wonderful story, a slowly unfolding mystery that I found absolutely mesmerising.

The setting and the vivid descriptions were quite superb - the neglected cottage where Julia and her daughter Viviane were forced to live after the death of Julia’s husband Alain, joined by Amy their former nursemaid, companion and friend; the brooding presence of the lake with its changing faces and hidden depths and dangers.

The story is told by Amy in a strong, clear voice - and she’s immensely likeable, a rational presence seeking to find an explanation for the strangeness that surrounds them. It’s a story full of tension, suffused with immense sadness and injustice, set in a community that likes to keep its secrets. And as the truth emerges around the life and death of Julia’s sister Caroline, it’s a quite enthralling story - a story of evil and depravity, full of surprises and unexpected discoveries, with a level of tension that cranks up until you can barely stand it, and a totally heart-stopping finale.

Louise Douglas is a quite magnificent story teller - the whole story is quite perfectly paced, maintaining a perfect balance between the unexplained and inexplicable and the emerging uncomfortable truth. It’s also heartbreakingly sad - Julia’s total desolation at her husband’s death is something you feel at your core, and Amy’s desperate attempts to help her and her daughter move on makes you ache inside at the injustice of it all. The atmosphere the author creates is quite exceptional - it’s absolutely impossible to tear yourself away. This was a quite wonderful read - I absolutely loved it.

Not for Kindle

This book is definitely a fun read -hence the 5 stars - but that is not what this review is about. The humor in the narrative is found in the footnotes which have to appear at the foot of the page to which the footnote refers or the point is lost. The kindle edition has all of the footnotes at the end of each chapter where their impact is completely lost. In fact, if I have any criticism of kindle it is that you cannot easily leaf forward or backward while reading a book. Unfortunately for me, I do both very often and find that I have to be judicious about the form in which I purchase a book. I clearly made a mistake buying this book in kindle form.

A giggly romance novel for the digerati

There's a bag of Mallomars in your kitchen. Surely nobody will mind if you eat one cookie? Well, maybe two. Okay, another one won't hurt. And somehow... hey, how'd this bag get empty?

Not that this has ever happened to me.

Sophie Kinsella's latest novel makes me think of tasty cookies that are secretly satisfying even if nobody can claim this is "good for you." It's a light, funny, romance novel, nothing more -- but then WHO THE HECK SAYS YOU HAVE TO HAVE MORE? Enough with the serious stuff, already. I sat up until midnight reading this book, and you probably will too.

Our heroine, Poppy, begins with a crisis: She's lost her engagement ring. In the frantic search for the lost emerald ring, someone swipes Poppy's cell phone, so she *oh no oh no* cannot text anybody or call anyone. She discovers instead that someone threw a cell phone in the trash... and finders keepers, right? This is the setup for a fun romp that I am tempted to call "zany" (but in a nice way), involving the characters of her in-laws-to-be (who are so scary-smart that she is intimidated), her work-friends, and especially the stranger to whom the phone originally belonged. If you live the cell-phone texting lifestyle (or know someone who does) this will be even more entertaining.

Underneath the welcome silliness are characters who are actively *nice people*, too. I won't spoil any of the details for you, just say that Kinsella makes the implausible utterly believable and smile-worthy if not laugh-out-loud funny.

If you're ready for a box of cookies (but with fewer calories) and a welcome escapist story that'll make you smile, grab this one.

Saviour of Chick Lit

I've already read the hardcopy but I just had to get a Kindle version of this because I love it so much! Of course it wasn't perfect but I absolutely adored the organic progression of Poppy and Sam's relationship. The ending felt rushed though and there were some ridiculously unrealistic moments you'd only probably see in a sitcom, but I chose to ignore those cringeworthy parts because I've yet to come across another book that has given me the level of feels as this one did, to think some people call me "Ice Queen".

I love Discworld.

My favorite thing about Pratchett's writing is his humor. The books are filled with adventure, fear, magic, instruction, and humor in perfect proportions. I love that certain characters appear throughout Discworld books. DEATH made a brief appearance here. He's my favorite Discworld character, and I smiled as much at seeing him as what he did. This series is one of my favorite escapes.

Humor, Heart and Nac Mac Feegles!

Tiffany Aching, the heroine of WEE FREE MEN is back for a second adventure where she heads off to learn the ways of being a witch. And folks, let me warn you now that Terry Pratchett isn't about to send her off to a mysterious school of magic where you get wands with stars on them and learn how to do spells that go twing. Learning to be a witch on the Discworld is another kind adventure entirely! At its heart, this is a coming of age story for Tiffany, who must face down a deadly threat called a hiver, and come to terms with her own self.
There's plenty of Terry's whimsical humor and wry satire to keep readers smiling and chuckling. Especially when the Nac Mac Feegle make their appearance in the story, of course! These little blue-tattooed Pictsies are delightfully irreverent and contentious, causing havoc and hilarity wherever they go. Along with the humor, however is a good solid dose of heart. I do believe Mr. Pratchett has done an exemplary job of making us care about the characters and creating believable, fallible and lovable. I was surprised at how much I came to care about the Mac Feegles new kelda, Jeanie as she struggles to take on the role she's been born for. Jeanie isn't a main character in the story, but her presence and other little touches like her, fill Pratchett's story with echoes of meaning and magic.
If I have one complaint about this book, it's that it felt too short. Events happened so quickly that before I knew it I was at the last page of the story. I did feel as though there were places where the narrative could have been expanded upon, characters who were not as fully fleshed out as they could have otherwise been. Still, for the younger reader, a shorter read is likely to be appreciated-and Pratchett can pack quite a punch even in a shorter form such as this!
Discworld fans that hungrily scoop up every new book by Terry Pratchett will be delighted to see Granny Weatherwax make a return appearance. This time the most formidable witch on the Discworld stays for more than a cameo role, with delightful results. Readers discovering Pratchett for the first time, you might want to grab WEE FREE MEN and read it first since it first introduces Tiffany Aching, but it isn't necessary to do so. If you enjoy these books please look for Pratchett's other young adult books: THE AMAZING MAURICE AND HIS EDUCATED RODENTS, and THE BROMELIAD TRILOGY.
