Grade 6–10—This new edition of the first book in Pratchett's excellent "Tiffany Aching" series (HarperTempest) features full-color illustrations that are true to the author's keen descriptions. Fans of the original won't find faults: Tiffany looks like a true nine-year-old, and the blue-skinned Wee Free Men seem appropriately fierce and funny at the same time. Three well-chosen foldouts show key plot transitions as Tiffany first sees the Wee Free Men, later steps into the fairy world, and ultimately unleashes her full powers. Plentiful spot illustrations and creative use of space show that the illustrator has clearly entered into the spirit of Tiffany's world. Significant words occasionally appear behind the text in light gray, appropriate for a girl who has read the dictionary (because "no one told her you weren't supposed to"). Line drawings of Wee Free Men frequently appear along page borders as they hang from, climb up, and occasionally steal the letters of the text. Recurring passages that tell the backstory of Tiffany's Granny, merely italicized in the original edition, are now cleverly highlighted by insets resembling yellowed paper. Pratchett's expertly written fantasy works fine without any pictures, but these attractive images are quite effective without overwhelming the words. Tiffany's companions on her quest are a talking toad, who used to be a human, and a band of fierce Wee Free Men, who are six inches tall, talk with a Scottish brogue, and are famous for "stealin' an' drinkin' an' fightin'!" The action is both manic and a little scary as the queen confronts her pursuers with a headless horseman, dreams that trap dreamers inside them, and more. In the end, Tiffany must face the Queen alone while attempting to sort out reality from nightmare. Both the humor and the danger will appeal to fans of Discworld; they will also draw readers who like J. K. Rowling's Harry, Hermione, and Ron. Sally Estes

Another masterpiece

I've beat reading Pratchett's novels almost since he began writing them, and have been amazed at his evolution. It takes more than a good imagination and a great sense of humor to write fantasy novels like these; it also demands a careful gaze into the human condition. I read all of Piers Anthony's Xanth novels, but in the middle of the series, I began to realize all of his protagonists were the same person in different clothing. In Pratchett's development as an author, we see him going back again and again focusing on one of many characters introduced in an earlier novel and breathing soul into it. This aspect of his writing is but one of many pleasures a reader can derive from his work.
In Wee Free Men, Pratchett starts from scratch and introduces us to a young shepherding girl named Tiffany, and takes us through her coming of age to her knowledge of exactly who she is. Along the way, he makes astute observations about the plight of humanity to live in a dream, and how Tiffany wakes up from that dream to become a power in her own right (a message we can all learn from). Pratchett's ability to insert profound wisdom into what might otherwise be just a fluffy fantasy story is one of his greatest strengths, and he accomplishes this while being entertaining and giving us a moving novel we continue to ponder after laying it down.

A Pratchett hero for young people.

This reader loves Terry Pratchett. Absolutely, completely, with a ferocity that borders on fanaticism, and a love that rivals any platonic friendship.
So reviewing one of Sir Terry Pratchett's works will only end in a long love letter to his art, wit, and work. A review would contain not only a look at his book, but his worldview and our place in it. To glance at one of his stories is to be invited into a world that is marvelous, treacherous, and thought-provoking. A keen understanding of the written word and humanity are woven into each book, that maybe not all are masterpieces, but certainly worthy of your time.
The Wee Free Men is aimed at a younger audience. Like most of the other entries into the discworld universe, you don't need to have read the rest of the series to enjoy yourself. However this story is mostly new characters, New locales, and simple storytelling that is accessible to practically any age group.
This book was a joy to read. Any fan of Sir Terry's work will tell you the same.

Wee Free Men, giant little girl

Love this book! This is my favorite DiscWorld novel. It's a kid's book, but I still love it as an adult. So did my friends' nine-year old. Other friends of mine listened to this on audiobook, and their whole family loved it. Tiffany Aching is smarter and has more character than any of the adults in DiscWorld or most other books. In a great series where the characters are fascinating but sometimes lack depth, Tiffany Aching is an ocean. She's why the witches are the best characters in the whole series, a great role model and inspiration for children. Read the book for the depth and listen to the audiobook to hear the great accent and humor of the Wee Free Men themselves.
