The 1980's: Countdown to Armageddon, by Hal Lindsey

The premise of this book is based upon Hal Lindsey's prophecies that the anti-Christ is already here on earth and will come forth during the 1980s. In a nutshell, the author predicts that Russia will attack Iran in order to gain control of the world's oil resources. Then China is going to jump into the fray and spread the war around the world, during which every major city is leveled and more than 1/2 of the world's population dies. This scenario concludes with the re-emergence of the Roman Empire, consisting of a 10-nation confederacy. At that juncture, a world political leader (an uber-persuasive brain-child who resolves of all of the world's problems, such as hunger and oil for everyone), will rise to power within this new world government. No one can resist this guy, who ultimately reveals that he is the Anti-Christ and, along with Satan, leads humanity to utter destruction.

really bad sci-fi
By Rich Merritt
In 1980, for my thirteenth Christmas, I asked for and received this book. Hal Lindsey, decrees that Jesus Christ would return and rapture us born-agains to heaven by 1988. Lindsey also predicted the ten-member European "Common Market" represented the ten-horned beast, or something with ten horns, called for in the book of Revelation.

Twenty years later and no rapture. The Common Market, now known as the European Union, has twenty-seven nations as members, not ten. There's no 27-horned beast mentioned in Revelation, the last book of the Bible (a book that almost didn't make the cut into the "canon of Scripture"). 27 horns is a lot to carry around, even for a nasty beast. I assumed Mr. Lindsey would've faded into oblivion, having made a fool of himself with his failed predictions, but when I googled him, imagine my surprise to learn he's got a website. The tab for online giving must mean a sufficient quantity of dupes give money to this charlatan to keep him prognosticating his fictional tales of mindless superstition. Not surprisingly, a search of his site for Countdown to Armageddon yields no results.

Needs to be updated badly!

I first read this when it was published in 1981 and it was interesting. It was basically a follow up to "The Late Great Planet Earth" which set the standard formula for apocolyptic prophecy. I re-read it today (2-16-98) and it is way off. Lindsey marches on about how communism is sweeping the planet, how the USA how become a 2nd rate power, and so on. All wrong. All corrected by historical events of the past 17 years. But as this was an amended version of TLGPE, he will surely come up with revisions on why the previous prophecies were errant. He will become extremely wealthy frightening people with history tied to Biblical prophecy. If he lives forever he can publish one of these every 5 or 10 years, and eventually, when it does happen, he can say "There! I told ya so!" The good parts: Lindsey lists what he considers to be prophetic/apocalyptic passages of the Bible. He does so without too much sermonizing, until the last few pages. The bad parts: All his completely WRONG forecasts of why we are in (as of 1981) the "end times". Actually, I had some good laughs re-reading it and finding it so far off-base. There are several humorous errors, including listing of 7 empires predicted by Daniel, from his time through the end time. Lindsey omits major ones such as the Ottoman Empire, Nazi Germany, etc etc. But the magic number must be 7! Also, the European Economic Community was 10 (he says) when the book was published, which is prophesized, but is now up to 16 or 17. Comments, anyone? Not worth buying (sorry Amazon) but perhaps worth buying at a flea market for a dime as a reference book on how difficult it is to interpret Biblical prophecy.

OBVIOUSLY, THE DECADE OF THE 1980s WAS NOT THE "LAST DECADE OF HISTORY AS WE KNOW IT"
By Steven H Propp
Harold Lee "Hal" Lindsey (born 1929) is a best-selling author, who is currently host of "The Hal Lindsey Report" TV program. (He formerly hosted International Intelligence Briefing on TBN, but the show was removed as being too "pro-Israel"/"anti-Arab"; he provides the financing for the Hal Lindsey Report himself.) Controversially, he has divorced three times and married four times. (His second wife, Jan, was the best-known, as she was featured on the back cover of his earlier books.) He has written many other books, including The Late Great Planet Earth; There's a New World Coming; The Messiah [aka 'The Promise']; The Rapture; Planet Earth, 2000 A. D.; The Final Battle; Planet Earth: The Final Chapter; Vanished Into Thin Air; The Everlasting Hatred: The Roots of Jihad, etc.

He wrote in the introductory pages of this 1980 book, "If the events detailed in this book were examined independently, it would be easy to miss their significance regarding the picture of the future painted by the Hebrew prophets. However, when each is considered in light of all the others, one thing becomes obvious: We are moving at an ever-accelerating rate of speed into a prophetic countdown. The very destiny of mankind is as stake." (Pg. xii) He cautioned, "The decade of the 1980s could very well be the last decade of history as we know it." (Pg. 8) Of the Antichrist, he said, "As I wrote 10 years ago in The Late Great Planet earth, I believe this man is alive today---alive and waiting to come forth." (Pg. 15) Furthermore, "I believe the false prophet is in the Middle East today, awaiting his fateful hour." (Pg. 48)

He again cites The Jupiter effect as predicting "scary side-effects of the new wave of quakes will be great floods... and nuclear power plant meltdowns at facilities built on or near the Earth's faults." (Pg. 29-30) About the European Common Market, he concedes, "It is possible that MORE than 10 nations could at one point be admitted. But in the final stages, it will number 10." (Pg. 104) He asserts, "I believe that this [EEC] parliament... will be the framework for the political force which will be headed by the anti-Christ. And I believe that leader is alive somewhere in Europe; perhaps he is already a member of the EEC parliament." (Pg. 106) He adds, "A member of the European Common Market will suffer a head wound which would normally be fatal. Miraculously he will be restored to health. That will be an unmistakable signal." (Pg. 112)

About the Trilateral Commission, he says, "I believe the Trilateralist movement is unwittingly setting the stage for the political-economic one-world system the Bible predicts for the last days... What the trilateralists are trying to establish will soon be controlled by the coming world leader---the anti-Christ himself." (Pg. 128) He adds, "prophecy definitely singles out who the leader of the western world will be in the final stage of history---and it WON'T be the U.S.... the 10-nation confederacy that rises up from the ruins of the Old Roman Empire will be the west's dominating power." (Pg. 131) He also argues, "I believe that if the U.S. ever turns its back on Israel, we will no longer exist as a nation. Don't take this lightly, for throughout history the rise and fall of empires can be directly related to how they treated the Jews." (Pg. 158)

And after quoting Matt 24:34, he insists, "But what generation was Jesus talking about?... He could only have meant the generation that would see the prophetic predictions come together... WE ARE THE GENERATION HE WAS TALKING ABOUT!" (Capitalization in the original.) (Pg. 162)

Anyone care to re-read Matthew 24:36 and Deuteronomy 18:22?
