Detailed commentary

William Lane's commentary on the Gospel of Mark examines each passage in depth and is sufficiently detailed that a scholar of the New Testament can benefit. At the same time it is clearly written; the layperson who does not have a background in NT studies can easily understand what Lane is saying. More technical issues are generally placed in footnotes.

In his introduction Lane does a good job of arguing in favor of the Marcan authorship of this gospel and answering the critics of this position. He also accepts a fairly early date for Mark (somewhere between 60 and 70 A.D.), which he argues for extensively. I would have liked to have seen him expand on his belief that Mark wrote first and that Matthew and Luke independently of each other used Mark. While this is an extremely common view it would have been helpful had he given an argument to establish this view and to answer criticisms that have been raised to it.
