Good simple RPG system

Has lots of solo modules too if you want to do that.

Do yourselves a favor though people, Flying Buffalo, the rights owner still has printed copies of all sorts of Tunnels & Trolls stuff and won't rip you off:

They also just finished a Kickstarter and along with Ken St Andre are doing up a new revision of the TnT ruleset with niftys extras in a deluxe version... they're still at the fulfilling KS backers stage and I missed that unfortunately.

If you are looking for a solo table top rpg this is a first choice for you. D&D may be to difficult for you if your looking for a beginner book this on the other hand is quite simple to understand and comprehend. If you want solo adventures look online you will find just around 50-75 individual solo adventures for free. This is the Corgi edition of T&T it is referred to as the 5th edition rule set. It is just slightly more simplified and reworded differently. You can find all of your necessary tools for this game (character sheet, adventure log, etc.) online for free. This is a choice for you if you are looking to start tabletop rpgs it will round you to a better understanding of what happens when a table top rpg is played. It is extremely versatile for single player to about four players till it starts to get overwhelming. And it is extremely addicting.

awesome serious competition to D&D very dying earth

very dying earth, yes thats the jack vance series that inspired D&D when read by gygax complte cheap and not as onerous as 4e D&D or pathfinder I find it all I need when you want to roleplay not be a human computer its up to the DM aways anyhow to make things realsitic awesome job!!!

Sakey, whose debut novel, The Blade Itself (2007), garnered a truckload of praise, returns with a chilling story that combines an ordinary couple’s desperation with a band of Chicago criminals’ unslaked thirst for revenge. It’s masterful in showing how the daily drip, drip of dreams deferred can lead people into peril. Sakey’s opening chapters juxtapose an unbearably tense murder-and-betrayal scene in a club against a domestic drama centered on a couple’s inability to conceive a child. Readers may feel a bit of whiplash with the contrast, but Sakey’s portrayal of the couple’s despair (to the tune of $15,000 per failed in vitro treatment) is essential to understanding their plight in the rest of the novel. The plot hinges, however, on one very creaky, contrived element. The couple owns a two-flat and rents the bottom unit to a taciturn, somewhat creepy tenant. The deus ex machina element comes in when the husband smells smoke, the couple investigates downstairs, and finds that where there’s smoke—there’s a pile of money just lying on the floor with the tenant conveniently dead. The couple is now $400,000 to the good, and the Chicago Police no wiser, but, of course, their troubles are just beginning. The dead tenant betrayed some very bad, well-connected criminals, who will stop at nothing to retrieve their money and exact revenge. Good People=Good Book!

The basic premise of Good People centers on the question 'How far would you go to keep hidden the fact that you found $370,000?' When Tom and Anna Reed find $370,000 they develop a simple plan regarding their find. Their plan is to keep the money hidden and wait to see if anyone comes to claim it. If not, they plan to keep the money and use it in ways that will change their lives. What the Reeds don't realize is that their simple plan has led them to cross some very dangerous men who won't stop until they get revenge no matter where they find it. Let me be very clear about the fact that Sakey's third book, Good People, is a very fast-paced, exciting, entertaining read. What the premise of the book is not, however, is original. That is, it is very similar to the book written several years ago by Scott Smith called A Simple Plan. As I said, Good People is a book that is suspenseful and worth reading, especially by those who have never read (or seen the movie) A Simple Plan. In comparison, however, I think readers (and/or viewers) of A Simple Plan will find, as I did, that Good People pales somewhat in comparison.

A great story, well told on its own terms, but it is also beneath its surface a brilliant cautionary tale

Sometimes it is the simple plot that grabs you the most effectively. I love complex ideas in novels, ones that present challenging twists and turns that keep you thinking and keeping track of the who, what, when and where. It's difficult, however, to beat a simple, direct idea that is so sharply focused with laser intensity that it burns itself into your brain so deeply that you can't get it out of your head. That is what one encounters with Marcus Sakey's new book.

GOOD PEOPLE has a simple enough premise. Four bad guys --- Jack, Bobby, Marshall and Will --- are involved in a robbery that quickly goes bad. Bobby winds up dead, and Will cuts out on his partners with the money. Will subsequently overdoses on drugs and dies in his rented duplex. His landlords, Tom and Anna Reed, find his lifeless body and discover the money. They keep it. And all hell breaks loose.

Let's start with Tom and Anna. You know them. You may even be them. They are overextended, up to their eyeballs in debt and barely hanging on, and undergoing extensive fertility treatments that have failed four times and make sex an obligation rather than a recreation. Sakey nails them so well, so painfully, that you almost feel like an intruder in their lives. When they find the money --- and the method by which this occurs is worth the price of admission all by itself --- it's like manna from heaven.

And the way the Reeds convince themselves that no one will ever know is note for note pitch-perfect. They report Will's death to the police but don't let on about the money, following the old theory that telling just enough of the truth will keep them safe. They pay off their debts, try another baby-making round, and still have plenty of benjamins left over.

There is only one problem. Someone does know about the money. Jack and Marshall are still out there, and both of them --- especially Jack --- are seething over what was done. They are looking for Will, turning over every rock they can to find him. And when Tom and Anna get a bit of unwelcome publicity about the gruesome discovery of the dead body on their property, Jack quickly figures out that while Will may be gone, the money isn't and that, in all probability, Tom and Anna have it. Jack wants the cash but is also looking to vent all of this serious anger he has over what happened. Tom and Anna are as good a target as any.

All of this would be more than enough to land GOOD PEOPLE on the top of your "must read" pile. But what is really striking is the manner in which Sakey documents step by step the Reeds' slow slide into disaster. One minute they're like Uncle Scrooge, rolling around in their money yelling "Wheee!" The next minute, not so much. By the time they realize that maybe they should get straight with the police (or with Jack, or with somebody) and turn the money in, it's way too late. And it doesn't take too long to get to "way too late." But even more than this, the book raises some subtle questions about greed and, more importantly, appreciating those blessings that one has --- and how easy it is to lose it all.

GOOD PEOPLE is a great story, well told on its own terms, but it is also beneath its surface a brilliant cautionary tale that will quietly resonate with you for some time after you finish reading. It is simply not to be missed.

Golden Nugget from 1918

Austin Strong is the step-grandson of Robert Louis Stevenson. He had eleven shows that ran on Broadway, the most well-remembered of which is probably "Seventh Heaven," for which Janet Gaynor won an Oscar in the 1927 film version. "Three Wise Fools" opened on Broadway at the Criterion Theatre on October 31, 1918 and ran for almost a year. It's a sweet comedy with three gruff old geezers who are roommates, all prominent men in New York City, a lawyer, a banker and a judge. They think of themselves as "The Three Musketeers," one for all and all for one. All shared a romance with the same girl in their youth. However, she chose another. They receive news that she has died and asks her old noble friends to help take care of her daughter. Sidney Fairchild is a lovely young woman who wishes to study law. They take her into their home. She transforms the stuffy old place into a colorful place filled with flowers and joy. The banker's nephew Gordon falls in love with the beautiful Sidney. The complication arises when a criminal named Benny the Duck escapes from an Atlanta prison. He's spotted in New York and has vowed to kill the judge who put him away. As Sidney & the 3 wise fools are about to go to the opera, Benny the Duck enters and knocks out the butler. Sidney finds herself alone with the criminal; and we are surprised to find she's on a first-name basis with Benny. Sidney has become greatly attached to all three wise fools and blows the police whistle alerting the cops watching the house. Benny escaped the Atlanta pen with another criminal that we learn is none other than Sidney's father. To protect her dad, she helps Benny escape through a skylight. The final act works out with all misunderstandings resolved. We learn that love is stronger than appearances. The show is a sweet comedy that tugs on the heartstrings and is well worth revival on the American stage. Enjoy!

About the Author
Dr Eric Berne, as the originator of transactional analysis, was always recognised as an important innovator in the field, but it was not until his Games People Play became an international bestseller that his methods achieved wide popularity. In his writings, until his death in 1970, Dr Berne outlined the principles of his system in works such as Games People Play, A Layman's Guide to Psychiatry, Sex in Human Loving, and Principles of Group Treatment. Dr Berne was a practising psychiatrist in Carmel, California, and held many important posts in professional psychiatric organisations and clinics.

A Specialty Book for Students of Tranactional Analysis

The author of this book is Dr. Eric Berne. He founded the school of Psychology known as Transactional Analysis. It was Berne's final work, published around the time of his death, ca. 1970.

The most important thing to know about this book is that NO ONE SHOULD READ IT BEFORE STUDYING TWO EARLIER TITLES: (1) I'M OK -- YOU'RE OK and (2) GAMES PEOPLE PLAY. Books 1 and 2 are the foundational documents of Transactional Analysis. But, WHAT DO YOU SAY...HELLO? is about a specialized subject in TA, Life Scripts. Indeed, Berne said that the state of the art knowledge of scripts in 1970 was still primitive. He compared it to automobiles in 1900.

With these warnings, WHAT DO YOU SAY is very useful to students who are ready for it. Berne was a good author, but one of his faults was to describe things incompletely. Thus, when he recaps earlier material in this final book, the reader gets another view which helps fill-in the earlier gaps. Ironically for me, this recap of earlier material was acutally more useful than the main subject matter: Scripts.

In fairness, we should also remember that Berne said his books were published for professional psychoanalysts, not for the general public.

very interesting

i. suggest the book to those who want to understand their behaviour and attitude and want to change certain thoughts and beliefs that prevent us from being our true self.
sometimes it is a bit technical for those who are not proessionist in the field but it is understandable overall and gives you interesting hints.

Once again, the animals are concocting their favorite brew of pumpkin soup when they realize that they've run out of salt. Cat announces that he's going shopping when directionally challenged, but headstrong little Duck insists on accompanying him. Cat relents only after Duck promises to hold on tight to avoid getting lost. A concerned Squirrel decides to bring up the rear on the trip to the city. With his friends on either side, Duck spies a pepper shop and decides that the flavoring would be a delicious addition to their soup. Squirrel begs to differ and he and Cat steam off in the direction of the salt shop, unknowingly leaving their distracted friend behind. Reminiscent of the panic of any youngster left alone in unfamiliar territory, Duck, in a terrible tizzy, becomes even more lost. A true-to-life, predictable resolution ensues although heightened by an overblown response by the police and fire departments. Readers will be reassured by this beguiling rendition of a common childhood experience. The rich coloration and expressive representations of the characters raise this story above the ordinary. A concerned mother hen leads panicky Duck back to the point of separation, while the others retrace their steps to enfold their missing friend in a warm embrace. Some adults may be troubled by Duck's ready acceptance of help from a stranger who is not a police officer, but little listeners will pay less attention to plot specifics than to Cooper's dramatic narrative and warm, dreamlike watercolors. I LOVE to read this book

This is my favourite book to read to my 3-year old daughter. She loves it too. The illustrations and story are terrific, the language just wonderful. A delightful story that has taught my daughter what to do if she's ever lost -- "stay in one place and we'll find you" -- in a fun and unscary way. And there are so many hidden gems for adults as well as kids. We love this even more than the original "Pumpkin Soup." Can't recommend it highly enough.

Narrative not as memorable as Pumpkin Soup

Pumpkin soup was a delightful book with narrative that flowed fluidly and enchantingly - it pulled you in and held you. Narrative that a preschooler was quick to memorize - narrative that flowed with the pictures. As such, I was ecstatic to preorder the paperback version of Pipkin of Pepper.

In this sequel to Pumpkin Soup, Cat, Squirrel, and Duck are back and going to the city to buy salt. On the way, Cat and Squirrel cajole Duck that if he is lost he is to stay put! Whereas Pumpkin Soup delivered life lessons in finely crafted prose, Pipkin of Pepper leaves little to interpretation. Well... you guessed it - Duck gets lost and does not stay put! Here's where the story falls apart. Rather than go on a quest to find Duck - in one short paragraph he is plied with pepper and comfort and then Cat and Squirrel just show up. The story is over before it started - no time for suspense, climax, or character building (a major strength of Helen Cooper's previous work). And what is the reward for getting lost - he gets to fly in a helicopter, thus failing to deliver another important life lesson - that consequences for mistakes are not positive. The story line is dull and choppy. I would rate it a very grudging 3 stars if it wasn't for the rich and vibrant illustrations, if not lacking a wee bit of imagination.

I cannot recommend Pumpkin Soup highly enough. However, as for this book I would suggest you peruse it at the bookstore before purchasing. The illustrations alone may be worth purchasing for some children. If it was my own opinion alone that this book was less than stellar, I could forgive it. However, my 4-year old who cares far more about story lines than pictures was very disappointed in this book and said she does not want to read it again - and that speaks volumes.

Behind the Scenes View

We had the privilege of a class field trip to a local bookstore to hear Helen Cooper talk about how she created this book. She fascinated a roomful of elementary school students (including many kindergartners) with her explanation of how she was motivated to write this book (trying to teach her daughter about what to do if she got lost), of her process of creating illustrations (she gets to buy as many paints and brushes and other art supplies as she wants, because it's her job!), and of the quirky elements and details in her pictures that were inspired by real-life images (a funky grinder in a coffee shop led to the pepper mill skyline in the book). Turn the pages of this book over and over to appreciate it all!

Ahh Bucky, What Became of Your Kind?

In its day (1969-72, when I first read it), this was one of those inspirational heartbreakers -- why can't EVERYONE see the promise of the approaching possible Golden Era? But with time (what, over 35 years now, since I first read it) even the great futurist himself seems a little dated. And I'd forgotten (or never really noticed before) how angry he could get, and not just at the Great Pirates who well deserve(d) it (especially considering recent economic news), but for those who had slighted him in the past as a gadfly of sorts. These lectures/expositions are a series of previously-published papers, and there is a lot of redundancy, but the basic question ("It's up to us, do we want to succeed or fail?") still rings true. And some of his ideas, like the World-Wide Electrical Power Grid, and the end of the Nation-States were absolutely brilliant in their foresight. The bottom line, however, and what I think will be his legacy, is to look at the world not only differently (the sun doesn't set, the world turns), but holistically (there is no up and down, only in and out)... and how about those buckminsterfullerene molecules -- they will change the world. We'll miss your kind, Bucky... we already do. (As a side note, I got to shake hands and speak briefly with Bucky after his Earth Day speech at Florida State University in 1974[?], just as the sun went down, and it still brings a tear to my eye to recall how both intelligent and innocent he was at the same time.)

This is one of the greatest books you will ever read. He is one of the most important figures of the 20th century only surpassed by Nikola Tesla. This book will open your eyes to so many things of science, politics, ecology, economics & much more. It is so profound & important I think it should be required reading for all politicians, all involved in academia & a must read for all High School & University students.

Richard Buckminster Fuller is a University to himself. I highly recommend everybody to watch on youtube his series of lectures "Everything I Know", they are from 2-3 hours each, & you'll learn more from him than probably anywhere or anybody else in your life. I discovered him later in life & wish I could have discovered him earlier. This man is a treasure chest of wisdom, profound empirical knowledge & overall supreme intellect he will blow your mind. He is a Demigod.

The Convert is about the British Suffrage movement, which the author knew well. Part witty and scathing commentary on the upper classes, part political rhetoric quoted directly from open-air meetings, and part muck-raking realism, The Convert moves back and forth between the personal and the political until the two can no longer be distinguished. The Convert uses as its frame the political "conversion" of Vida Levering, a beautiful, upper middle-class woman. We follow Vida's growing discontent with "country weekend" society and her increasing awareness of the common lot of women. Forthright and direct, Elizabeth Robins discusses issues that must have been shocking in 1907: unwed motherhood, the effects of the inequality of women, and the essential disrespect that underlies chivalry. Reminiscent of Jane Austen and foreshadowing the work of Virginia Woolf, The Convert is a fascinating novel. It provides us with a sense of history and a feeling of pride in what women could and did accomplish. AMY BUTLER GREENFIELD studied Spanish medieval history at Harvard and Oxford. She is descended from a family of textile dyers and is a member of the dyers guild in London.

Red makes the world go round

This book, "A Perfect Red" by Amy Butler Greenfield, takes us to many of secure worlds while showing us the economic and psychological histories of the color red. Much more than the color red, she shows how these economies created wars and alliances. She also covers commerce and the distribution of plants and animals as it is seen from the color red. The focus is not as narrow as it sounds and much of this can be applied to other plants and colors.

Mrs. Greenfield starts out in her book with justification for why she's following the color red. Some of these justifications are very thin. But once you get into the details of the book you will be absorbed and as much as you think you know about history, commerce, agriculture, botany, and politics there is always something new to be learned. Somehow I lived my whole life without ever hearing about cochineal (a type of red dye) and variants.

This book is so well written in such detail that you almost want to go out and try some of the experiments with your own creating of the color red.
