Fascinating first hand account on how Liverpool lost its mojo
By Ian Acheson
As most fans of LFC who experienced the heady days of the 70s and 80s we found it incredible how our much loved club fell off the pace during the 90s. This excellent book from renowned LFC author and supporter, Simon Hughes, provides some tremendous insight into what went wrong.
Interestingly, I couldn't help thinking that what happened to LFC was what happened to so many well known businesses and brands like Kodak, Nokia and Blackberry. We became arrogant and stopped realising that a football club like a business needs to keep re-inventing himself. So we got over taken by Manchester United and now their City neighbours and Chelsea.
In revealing the first hand accounts of some of big name players and lesser lights plus the two key managers during that decade (Souness and Evans) the reader gets a pretty good picture of what went wrong. Yes, it was a decade of great change in football. Money and foreigners flooded the game which had a significant impact on the culture of a club. All of a sudden the players carried a lot more influence than the past.
I particularly appreciated reading Souness' account. Having been a huge fan of him as a player we had such hope when he took over from Dalglish. He goes into some detail as to what happened. Yes, he had seen some of the changes that were occurring but met a board still stuck in the glory days mindset. Just imagine what might have happened if he'd been able to sign Peter Schmeichel and Eric Cantona. Yes, every manager has their big transfer misses and Roy Evans mentions a few of his as well but some of these were particularly galling as to the reasons they didn't happen. In recent seasons it's the player not wanting to come to Liverpool for whatever reason but in Schmeichel's case, he was a fan and he desperately wanted to play for the team he supported. Souness could have built his defence around him and United wouldn't have got him.
I also enjoyed David Thompson's chapter. A fiery Scouser who wasn't given the chance under Houllier that many of us fans had wished.
I'd love to read an account that compares what United did during the same period. The decisions Ferguson and the board made in those early days set them up for such success that they continue to benefit from today.
Every keen supporter of LFC who has an interest in more than just the players and team results will enjoy this rich account.
