The story is great, the 4 star review is mostly because the print is no where near the size of the page. This causes it to look strange and detracts from the look of the book. I understand that it is a facsimile print. But I can't help wonder why not just make a book with smaller pages, or increase the size of the text? Even so, it works for me as I was just looking to have a physical copy of the book for my library and I am grateful for their willingness to reprint the book at all.

''History, as one theme of this study will try to show, has surrendered much of its former authority to fiction."
By Clay Garner
This presents the emotional, aesthetic world post war. Feelings, hatred or love, predominate. This is a valuable addition explaining the reasons for modernity. Contents -

ACT ONE
I. Paris
II. Berlin
III. In Flanders’ Fields

ACT TWO
IV. Rites of War
V. Reason in Madness
VI. Sacred Dance
VII. Journey to the Interior

ACT THREE
VIII. Night Dancer
IX. Memory
X. Spring Without End

This work requires an open mind and flexible thought. For example: ''Introspection, primitivism, abstraction, and myth making in the arts, and introspection, primitivism, abstraction, and myth making in politics, may be related manifestations. Nazi kitsch may bear a blood relationship to the highbrow religion of art proclaimed by many moderns. Our century is one in which life and art have blended, in which existence has become aestheticized. History, as one theme of this study will try to show, has surrendered much of its former authority to fiction.'' Sounds condemning, even harsh. It this valid? Eksteins presents persuasive argument.

''Ideas were much more likely to rise from a prescribed set of moral principles, derived essentially from Christianity and parenthetically from humanism. Action and behavior were to be interpreted in terms of the same principles. That buffer, between thought and action, a positive moral code, has disintegrated in the twentieth century, and in the process, in the colossal romanticism and irrationalism of our era, imagination and action have moved together, and have even been fused.'' Who can deny it?

Seems the basic theme is the drastic change in European history. Quotes Lenin - ''The European war signifies a violent historical crisis, the beginning of a new epoch,” insisted Lenin in late 1914.'' This entire work is devoted to explaining just what changed and why. Insightful and trenchant.

One new (to me) explanation was - ''And as the external world collapsed in ruins, the only redoubt of integrity became the individual personality. David Jones looked on the Somme offensive as the last great action of the old world. Until then, the old customs and attitudes still held. What came after, he called “the Break”: “The whole of the past, as far as I can make out, is down the drain.” Similarly, Joyce’s Stephen Dedalus was provoked to remark, in words reminiscent of Schopenhauer, that “history is a nightmare from which I am trying to awake.” As the past went down the drain, the I became all-important.'' Fascinating connection!

Eksteins sees Nazism not as a few misleading many, but as logical result of cultural breakdown - ''Slowly the scale of Nazi atrocity began to surface. The toll had been horrendous: millions of Jews, millions of foreign slave laborers, Gypsies, homosexuals, Jehovah’s Witnesses, the infirm. Auschwitz, too, became an emblem of the western spirit.'' In this list, only Jehovah's Witnesses were martyrs who choose to resist as conscious decision. The others were sad victims. The Judeo/Christian morality/faith was/is justified by their record. It protected them from the breakdown and shame. They don't have the shame or guilt that racks modernity.

''After Auschwitz, for Theodor Adorno, poetry was no longer possible. Words, the main vehicles hitherto of western sensibility and rationalism, were no longer adequate or appropriate. For many, silence seemed the only proper response. The scenes uncovered by the Allied armies in 1945 were not the inevitable outgrowth of the events that took place in early 1933, but they were a probable outcome. National Socialism was yet another offspring of the hybrid that has been the modernist impulse: irrationalism crossed with technicism. Nazism was not just a political movement; it was a cultural eruption. It was not imposed by a few; it developed among many. National Socialism was the apotheosis of a secular idealism that, propelled by a dire sense of existential crisis, lost all trace of humility and modesty—indeed, of reality.''

Eksteins sees some of the extremes of Nazi ideas still present, although attenuated - ''Nazism was an attempt to lie beautifully to the German nation and to the world. The beautiful lie is, however, also the essence of kitsch. Kitsch is a form of make-believe, a form of deception. It is an alternative to a daily reality that would otherwise be spiritual vacuum. It represents “fun” and “excitement,” energy and spectacle, and above all “beauty.” Kitsch replaces ethics with aesthetics. Kitsch is the mask of Death. Nazism was the ultimate expression of kitsch, of its mind-numbing, death-dealing portent. Nazism, like kitsch, masqueraded as life; the reality of both was death. The Third Reich was the creation of “kitsch men,” people who confused the relationship between life and art, reality and myth, and who regarded the goal of existence as mere affirmation, devoid of criticism, difficulty, insight. Their sensibility was rooted in superficiality, falsity, plagiarism, and forgery. Their art. was rooted in ugliness. They took the ideals, though not the form, of the nineteenth-and early-twentieth-century avant-garde, and of the German nation in the Great War, and by means of technology—the mirror—they suited these ideals to their own purpose. Germany, the home of Dichter und Denker [poets and thinkers], of many of the greatest cultural achievements of modern man, became in the Third Reich the home of Richter und Henker [judges and hangmen],the incarnation of kitsch and nihilism.'' Superficial, fun, excitement, devoid of criticism and insight? This is not just the Nazi world, this is now!

This work is filled with such insights. Hitler and the wide appeal to the Germans covers many pages. Well done.

Anyone interested in the change to modernity and how it happened will enjoy this. Eksteins connects some of the excesses of the past to the practices of the present. Thought provoking!

Interesting But Flawed
By R. Albin
This interesting book is an effort to meld cultural/intellectual history with a broad interpretation of European history in the early 20th century. Eksteins begins with the outbreak of WWI, the experience of the war, selected features of the interwar period, and concludes with a discussion of the Nazis. Eksteins follows a number of other scholars, for example, Carl Schorske and Fritz Stern, in examining the flight from rationality seen in the pre-WWI period and its consequences. Eksteins' exemplary metaphor is the Stravinsky/Nijinsky/Diaghilev ballet The Rites of Spring. In this work, Eksteins sees the cultivation of the emotional/irrational, the preoccupation with death, and the abandonement of the rational/ethical which he identifies as the intellectual Zeitgeist of the period. Eksteins then proceeds to connect this modernist Zeitgeist with the outbreak of the First World War and ensuing events. In Eksteins analysis, the German nation is a figure of Nietzchean amorality, intoxicated with emotion and a vague idea of the future, attacking the backward looking middle class rationality of the status quo exemplified by Britain.

This book as a number of positive features. The quality of writing is unusually good. Eksteins, in a artful piece of rhetoric, proceeds to carry the Rite of Spring ballet metaphor right up to the end of WWII, giving what could have been a series of chronologically arranged essays a nearly novelistic integrity. Eksteins does very well with cultural history and cultural criticism, and this book contains a good deal of interesting information and analysis.

Eksteins' major thesis of identifying the modernist movement and the outbreak of WWI is, however, questionable. In this model, almost everything about German society, including the Schlieffen plan, is interpreted in a modernist context. The German leadership, drawn from the traditional aristocracy and upper classes, were hardly modernists intoxicated with the future. They were scared of modernization with great anxiety about democratization, the advance of socialism, and incorporation of large numbers of Catholics into the German state. The aggressive foreign policy of Wilhelmine Germany was driven in lage part by a perceived need, typical of authoritarian states under internal pressures, to use foreign adventures to paper over social fissures and to bolster legitimacy. The decision to pursue preventive war against the Franco-German alliance was a result of worries that the rapid industrialization of Russia would erode German preeminence in continental Europe. WWI was not started by daring modernists pursuing creative destruction but rather by a group of backward looking men with a profound fear of the future. Eksteins makes similar errors in his characterization of Britain, which was much more dynamic than implied by his discussions.

Eksteins discussion of WWI focuses on the experience of the Western Front and is generally quite good. This is, however, both typical and somewhat misleading. As is often the case, this account ignores all the other aspects of the war, for example, the enormous scope of the Eastern front, which was much more a war of manuever. Eksteins makes a surprising number of errors. Its not true that the Germans preferred a war of attrition, if anyone aimed at attrition, it was the Allies and their blockade of Germany. The Schlieffen plan, a number of campaigns in the East, unrestricted submarine warfare, and the great offensives of 1918 were all efforts to achieve decisive victory. Eksteins describes the German army as loyal to the end, ignoring the widespread collapse of morale and discipline in 1918. German war aims were hardly vague aspirations driven by modernist adventurism but concrete expressions of a desire to ensure German hegemony, as shown by the terms of the Brest-Litovsk treaty.

Eksteins discussions of the interwar period, focusing on the significance of Charles Lindbergh and Erich Maria Remarque, are a combination of astute criticism and not very astute psychodynamic theorizing. His discussions of the Nazis cover ground discussed by many historians who stress the emotional, anti-rational quality of the Nazi movement. Eksteins, however, neglects the specific ideology of the Nazis. This is an error, because while the Nazi ideology was fairly vague, it was important. Anti-Semitism, for example, was a key feature of Nazism but not, at least initially, of Italian Fascism, and this proved to be very important when the Nazis came to power.

A remarkable tour de force about The Great War
By Robert Moore
I have read several books dealing with the First World War before, but none except for Paul Fussell's THE GREAT WAR AND MODERN MEMORY can match this brilliant book for its scope and brilliance. Other books deal with the nuts and bolts of history, but Eksteins is concerned with zeitgeist, both that which animated the birth of war and the way it was altered by that war. More than anything, Eksteins is concerned with the metaphysics of the war, or the metaphysics of the world that it transformed.

The book is structured, like any good play, into three broad acts. The first deals with the world on the eve of the war, examining attitudes, especially aesthetic attitudes, in France, Germany, and England, before the onset of the war. The sections on the controversial debut of Diaghilev's production of Stravinsky's THE RITES OF SPRING (which obviously provides the book with its title), which deals in dance with a ritual blood sacrifice, are especially hypnotic. Act Two focuses on the war itself, and even if one has read previous and equally nightmarish accounts of that insane and pointless conflict, Eksteins will bring the war alive for the reader. One is especially impressed by the senselessness of the entire affair, so senseless that nonsense seemed to be at home there. World War Two at least seemed to make sense for the participants. Hitler and Tojo made the stakes all too clear, but the Great War was above all an affair of moral ambiguity, and Eksteins is brilliant at bringing this out, something that a purer historian like Martin Gilbert or John Keegan is ultimately unable to do, because he or she is limited by the task of the historian to deal with ethical and aesthetic categories. The final act deals with the world remade by the events of 1914-18. Eksteins focuses on three main aspects: Lindbergh's flight across the Atlantic, the publication of and response to Erich Maria Remarque's ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT, and the rise of Nazism in post-war Germany.

It is an interesting question what genre RITES OF SPRING belongs to. Eksteins offers too many insights that would normally exceed the job of the historian to label it simple history, though one could resort to calling it "intellectual history." It is that, but he also becomes in his book a bit of a moral chronicler. The book is more a work of art than a work of history. Although it contains no obvious narrative, it feels as if it has a plot.

This is one of the more remarkable, haunting books I have read in recent years. Absolutely no one interested in the meaning of the twentieth century, and especially no one interested in the Great War should skip it. The only ones it will disappoint will be those primarily concerned with military strategy and body counts.

I read this when I was 13 years old and I have never forgotten it
By Lorrie
This story is very much a powerful and thought-provoking read.

Yes, it is primarily centered on the lives of two men, a Jewish young man by the name of Rudi Weiss, the artist, who's the son of a prominent doctor and also it's tells of a up-and-coming young lawyer, named Eric Dorff.

The things that these two men have in common is that both are living in Germany during the time when the NAZI Party is on the rise. They are both quiet, shy, sort of retiring men but strong-willed. And both seem to be the type that are followers, meaning that they will "go with the crowd" or the majority.

So, Rudi is sent to a concentration camp and Eric goes on to become a SS officer.

However, in the novel horrific details of HITLER's hatred. Things I read and can never forget are that Jews were strung on line and water hoses were put in their mouths on full blast until their stomachs burst!

This book is not for the faint of heart and I read as part of list of classics to read in 8th Grade for extracurricular reading. (The list included things like IF Beale Street Could Talk, and Gone With the Wind, etc.)

The story moves you because you see the men and their families but you get wider look at how the entire country is also reacting to the events in this new war.

It's an interesting look at how war really does not change the hearts of men or make them want peace. WARRING FOR PEACE, truly is an oxymoron and does not make sense, although that is not the main point of this novel.

Like the Old Adage Says "The Book is Often Better Than the Movie"
By LactivistAnti-VaccineLiberal
First off, even before I read Holocaust, I had already seen the Holocaust miniseries that this book is based on -- though I did not even know that there was a book until very recently.

Because the Holocaust miniseries aired on TV before I was even born, it wasn't until it was shown again on The History Channel sometime in the late 90s that I saw it for the first time. At that time, I was very disappointed by the lack of closure for the characters at the end of the movie. But because I'd seen it on TV, in what I assumed was syndication, I just thought that some of the scenes had been cut in order to make room for more commercials and that I'd get to see those scenes when it was released on home video (or later on, on DVD or Blu-Ray). But several years later, when the movie was finally released on DVD, and I bought one, I saw that the ending of the movie was still just as abrupt as the version I saw on TV, and was hugely disappointed to read that the DVD "may be edited from its original network version". Since I wasn't even born yet, when the network version aired, I never got to see that version, so I had no way of knowing what scenes had been cut (and were missing) from the DVD version -- and even though I got an official VHS set that said it was the original full-length version of the movie, the ending was still the same as both the TV version I saw as well as the DVD set. So wanting to find out if there was anymore information about the movie and characters, I started searching online, and after a bit of Googling, I found out that there was a BOOK by Gerald Green about this movie. So I immediately bought this book (for $1.95 on eBay) and I'm so glad I did, because after reading it, I was finally able to find out the ultimate fate of the main/surviving characters and get relative closure to the story.

I have been extremely interested in the subject/era of the Holocaust ever since I was around 9 years old, and I saw some of the concentration-camp scenes in War and Remembrance which had a profound effect on me. Although it gave me terrible nightmares for awhile (as did reading Viktor Frankl's Man's Search for Meaning which I'd read some passages of around that same time) it sparked a very deep & lifelong interest (some family members have even called it an "obsession") in the Holocaust.

From the "blurb" on the back of the book:

A Story of Love, of Hatred, of Death, of Heroism and Survival. A Story Beyond Tears of Two Families in World War II.
The searing saga of the Dorf family and the family Weiss -- one swept up in a frenzy of murderous rage, the other, anguished victims.
ERIK DORF: His diary reveals a charming, brilliant young German lawyer, the SS officer so consumed with love for his country and Führer -- and so aflame with ambition -- that he can justify plans for the mass murder of Jews.
RUDI WEISS: His story exposes a spectacularly fearless young Jew, a man so tough, so brave, he rushes into love and defies death in a world ablaze with terrifying passions.
HOLOCAUST -- A NOVEL OF SURVIVAL AND TRIUMPH

Holocaust by Gerald Green is the harrowing & heartbreaking story of two German families from Berlin, prior to, and during World War II -- one a Christian family who become Nazis out of economic necessity, and eventually become bloodthirsty, remorseless mass murderers, and the other, a Jewish family who become their victims, and whose lives are gradually but systematically destroyed in the diabolically evil genocide known as the "Shoah, or more commonly called the HOLOCAUST.

** POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD!! **

The "Aryan" Dorf family, is headed by Erik, a charming & brilliant, yet unemployed German lawyer who struggles to to find work to support his wife and two young children, Peter and Laura. At the insistence of sickly (but yet, still extremely ambitious-for-her-husband) wife, Marta, Erik joins the Nazi Party out of sheer desperation to earn income, but then rapidly advances within the SS, and in a short time, becomes essentially the "right-hand man" for Reinhard Heydrich, a top-level Nazi and one of the engineers of the "Final Solution". As Erik rises up the ranks, and is constantly bombarded with & brainwashed by Nazi ideology, he is soon transformed from someone who, in the beginning, had little to no interest in politics, and is such a meek, mild-mannered & gentle man, that seems the type unable to harm even a fly and becomes a ruthless cold-blooded killer who's main & primary concern is career advancement, and loyalty to "the Fatherland" & the Führer. Encouraged by Marta, who is insanely obsessed with her husband's ambition (and at least in the beginning, his lack thereof!) and career advancement to the exclusion of nearly everything else, Erik abandons all morals, empathy, values & ethics, and is able to not only justify but order and even actively participate in the slaughter of millions.

The other family is the Jewish, and at least in the beginning, the middle to upper-class Weiss family, headed by Dr. Josef Weiss, a Polish-born & raised, general physician, and his cultured, aristocratic, and usually domineering German-born & raised wife, Berta, who came from a "Hoch-Deutsch" family, whose ancestors were ethnic German "court Jews" and friends of princes & cardinals. Together, Josef & Berta have three children -- and in the beginning of the book, they are twenty-one year-old artist, Karl (who in the first chapter, marries a young Christian "Aryan" girl, named Inga Helms), seventeen year-old athlete & star soccer player Rudi, and thirteen year-old Anna.

Holocaust is written from the perspective of one character from each of these 2 families -- in the Dorf family storyline, its written from the POV (point of view) of Erik, told through his diaries & notes, and in the Weiss family storyline, its written from the POV of younger son & middle child Rudi, who tells the story of himself and his family (usually in flashbacks, as he chronicles the his family's history and tries to trace their ultimate fate, living on a kibbutz in Israel after the war) and their lives before & during the Holocaust, and how, one by one, every single member of his family is murdered (or in the case of his maternal grandparents, driven to suicide) by the Nazis. The book opens with a Prologue chapter set in November 1952 at Kibbutz Agam in Israel. In the Prologue, Rudi briefly describes his current life, including living on the kibbutz with his Israel-born sabra wife, Tamar, and his two sons, Hanan & Ari, ages five & four, while working as the athletic director at the local high school. He talks about his concerted efforts to search for information about his murdered family, talking to numerous Holocaust survivors, and corresponding with many people who knew his parents, brother, and uncle. Rudi then tells how, during his search he discovered that "in one of those crazy coincidences with which those dreadful years are filled", that the SS Major Erik Dorf and his wife had at one time been patients of his late father, Dr. Josef Weiss in Berlin -- and just three years after Dr. Weiss had cared for Erik & Marta Dorf, that the same Erik Dorf was signing orders and instituting Nazi policies that would lead to the slaughter of Dr. Weiss and the rest of the family (with of course, the exception of Rudi). The first chapter of this book begins with Rudi's story set in August 1935 in Berlin, at the wedding between Karl and Inga, who are both 21 years old. Whereas, in Erik Dorf's storyline, it starts in September 1935 with the unemployed Erik and his ill wife Marta, going to see Dr. Josef Weiss, who diagnoses a systolic heart murmur, and discovering that Dr. Weiss had also treated Erik Dorf's parents, as well as Erik during his childhood, decades earlier. Later, unable to find decent employment, and struggling to support his family, at the insistence of his wife, Erik interviews with Reinhard Heydrich for a job in the Nazi Party and as the old saying goes, "the rest is history!"

With the exception of the prologue set in 1952, the first part of the first chapter which is set in 1935, and 2 letters that Rudi received in 1950, that were included towards the end of the book (letters that Rudi received from a US Army Intelligence captain who interrogated Erik Dorf after the war, and from Erik's uncle, Kurt Dorf), the rest of this book spans the period from 1938 to 1945. This book covers all the events in the Holocaust, from Kristallnacht to the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, the Sobibor death camp revolt, and ultimately the end of World War II & the liberation of the camps. Seen through the point of view of both Rudi Weiss, and Erik Dorf, this book details all the crimes of the Nazis, including "Kristallnacht", the "Action T4 euthanasia" murders of the disabled, the Babi Yar massacres, the deportations to & imprisonment in the ghettos, and of course, the murders of millions in the death camps.

Holocaust is a searingly moving story, that drives home the magnitude of death, pain & destruction caused by the Hitler and his Nazi thugs during the Third Reich -- and how utterly senseless it all was. After reading this (just like after seeing the Holocaust TV miniseries), I just felt so bereft at the thought of how many happy loving families like the Weiss family were ruthlessly destroyed for no reason. However, I'm glad that at least the book gave relative closure to the character & storyline of Rudi and Inga and shared what happened with/to them after the war -- UNLIKE the TV miniseries, which ended so abruptly, and left the ultimate fate of both Rudi and Inga, as virtual "cliff-hangers". I was glad that Rudi, especially, was able to start fresh and rebuild his life in Israel, remarry, have 2 sons, and live relatively happily on the kibbutz with his wife and children.

Nevertheless, just like with the majority of the Holocaust-related books or films that I've read or seen over the years, after reading Holocaust I was left feeling drained, defeated and devastated at how millions of innocent people were senselessly & brutally murdered -- and especially that the rest of the world just sat by day after day, week after week, and month after month for YEARS and just let it happen, and worse, keep happening. For all the claims & promises of "Never Again", the rest of the world has still sat by while genocide after genocide continues to happen -- in Cambodia, in North Korea, in Israel/Palestine, in Serbia/Croatia/Bosnia-Hercegovina, in Rwanda, the Sudan, and Sierra Leone, and in Uganda, the Congo, Darfur and so many others!

Unfortunately, the world seems to have learned NOTHING from the Holocaust, and that is one of the saddest & scariest things of all!! :(

Mia and her twin brother have had a hard life growing up. Their sick mom only got better when their grandfather showed up and made her, but when he passes away, it gets bad again. Mia is meek and silent, trying to appease everyone without really doing anything. Jamie, on the other hand, is growing more and more angry and wants his mom to sit up and take notice. He's mad that Mia doesn't understand and wants to show her that she can't always rely on him...after all, what if one day he isn't there anymore?

That's why when news hits that a gunman is in the school, Mia doesn't leave like the rest of her class. She starts to wondering: is that what Jamie was planning? Is this his way to show their mom that she needs to get better?

I love to read books that deal with school shootings because they are all different in how they approach the topic. This is the main reason why I wanted to read BANG, BANG, YOU'RE DEAD! The book is told in a back-and-forth pattern for most of the novel, with the present chapters showing Mia going through the school looking for the shooter who may or may not be her brother, Jamie. As for the other chapters, they are Mia's recollections of times that Jamie showed his anger and destructive behavior...which, all added up, give a lot of support to the idea that it really might be Jamie with the gun.

I really enjoyed the chapters that showed the past, because it allowed us a look into the things we weren't privy to when first starting the book. It gives us all an idea of who Mia and Jamie are and why they would want to cause a scene. It all basically leads to their mother, who is mentally ill but won't get the help she needs. Instead, she sways between depressing can't-get-out-of-bed days and manic let's-shop-for-things-we-can't-afford days.

This is a really fast book and I definitely enjoyed reading it. I should warn that some of the present chapters get a bit tedious, as you really just want Mia to figure out who the shooter is and what's happening or will happen after this.
Once the moment arrives, though, it's all worth it.

Believe me, this is one book that is sure to be a hit with a lot of people because it's not easy to figure out. You think you know what's going on, but in the end, do you really understand?

Now the girls know a murder must have taken place... and there's more than one person at Deepdean with a motive.
Now Hazel and Daisy not only have a murder to solve: they have to prove a murder happened in the first place. Determined to get to the bottom of the crime before the killer strikes again (and before the police can get there first, naturally), Hazel and Daisy must hunt for evidence, spy on their suspects and use all the cunning, scheming and intuition they can muster. Review
"Ripping good fun" The Times "A skilful blend of golden era crime novel and boarding school romp ... The novel works both as an affectionate satire and an effective murder mystery, and Stevens can go places Enid Blyton never dreamt of ... Top class" Financial Times "Friendship, boarding school and a murder worthy of Agatha Christie" The Bookseller "Plotting is what sets this book apart; this is about who was where at the time of the murder, and it's about finding the chink in the alibi" Telegraph "An addictive debut, full of wit, panache and iced-bun breaks" Metro

About the Author
ROBIN STEVENS was born in California and grew up in an Oxford college, across the road from the house where Alice in Wonderland lived. She has been making up stories all her life. When she was twelve, her father handed her a copy of The Murder of Roger Ackroyd and she realised that she wanted to be either Hercule Poirot or Agatha Christie when she grew up. When it occurred to her that she was never going to be able to grow her own spectacular walrus moustache, she decided that Agatha Christie was the more achieveable option.

She spent her teenage years at Cheltenham Ladies' College, reading a lot of murder mysteries and hoping that she'd get the chance to do some detecting herself (she didn't). She then went to university, where she studied crime fiction, and now she works at a children's publisher, which is pretty much the best day job she can imagine. Robin now lives near London with her boyfriend and her pet bearded dragon, Watson.

"Wells & Wong take us by storm"
By aparajita
Its charming. Its fun. Its refreshingly young. Its Sherlock Holmes & Dr. Watson in a rather younger female version. Set in a 1930s boarding school for girls, sees Daisy Wells & Hazel Wong, members of the Detective Society, cunningly battle lessons, Masters & Mistresses, peers and fellow dorm mates, relish some well deserved Bunbreaks, all the while on the lookout for a nice new case to solve and crime to detect ...... Or so says Daisy Wells' detective novels.

But real lie comes knocking when Hazel discovers the dead body of their science mistress Ms. Bell but when she raises the alarm the body mysteriously vanishes ..... warranting the services of the Wells & Wong Detective Society as they go on gathering evidences, eliminating alibis and suspects when nobody knows what actually happened to Ms. Bell.

Daisy and Hazel were of course the best part. The perfect English Rose Daisy (or as much you would expect of a child) and the Oriental girl from Hong Kong Hazel because of which she is treated differently by everyone. Her peers have some very weird habits and quirks and reading Hazel's running commentary at the most opportune moments put a smile on all our faces seeing as she is the voice of the book. Their friendship is a little complicated but it is interesting to see them go through highs and lows and stay tight as they are.

They are not your conventional detectives either, nor do they possess the means to investigate like grownups do so it is really interesting to see them achieve their objectives with such cleverness and dexterity with the limited amount of freedom they are afforded. A well crafted and refreshingly cunning new whodunit through the eyes of third formers. I am pretty sure that Daisy & Hazel are even younger than the Secret 7, Famous Five, Nancy Drew and those Hardy Boys .... So that's something isn't it ..... Bravo girls.

Wonderful Book; Take Care When Selecting
By Pop Bop
First, some housekeeping. The "Wells & Wong Mysteries" are American reissues of the books in the recent British series titled "[The] Murder Most Unladylike Mysteries". The reissues are published by Simon & Schuster. The originals were published by Corgi. That's fine, but, the new publisher has changed at least the first book's title. So, this first book in the reissued series, "Murder Is Bad Manners" is the same book as the first book in the British series, which was titled "Murder Most Unladylike". Books from both series are available for sale on either Amazon or Amazon.co.uk. So, to avoid buying the same book twice, check publishers and book descriptions.

I emphasized the above because I hate it when publishers change titles and make it a chore to collect a complete yet unduplicated set of a favorite series. Moreover, the first Wells & Wong book is so good it is likely you will try to find others.

This book is an entertaining and satisfying combination of a boarding school story, an Agatha Christie style mystery, an historical mystery, (the book is set in the 1930's), and a friendship tale involving two remarkably different but equally appealing girl detective/heroines. Our narrator, Hazel Wong, plays Watson to Daisy Wells' Sherlock, but while Hazel is somewhat in awe of Daisy she is no second banana. Unusual for such a book, Hazel's narrative is conversational and a bit diffident, but bolstered by a keen eye, a touch of an edge, and surprising insight. English rose Daisy is a more complex character, sort of a Russian doll type of character, and effortlessly holds the reader's attention.

The era and the boarding school environment are authentically rendered. There is not a lot of authorly heaving and grunting as the scenes are set. The time and place and the little details of school life just naturally flow through the book. This is not one of those books in which it appears that the author is consulting note cards to make sure that all of her historical research is being included.

The mystery, as you might expect, isn't terribly elegant, but the girls' detecting is honest, their reasoning is rigorous, the solution is satisfying, and there are only a few convenient coincidences or chance discoveries. There is a fair amount of spying, sneaking, and brazening it out, which are played for fun. Classic mysteries are terribly difficult to write. Classic mysteries for middle grade readers, who can be literal and unforgiving, may be even harder to write. This one scores high style and fairness marks.

All of that said, though, I come back to the two heroines. Distinct, and distinctly different, they make a fine and appealing team. Their association, (it isn't necessarily a "friendship" as such), makes sense, and is much more nuanced than seems usual for a book like this. Of course there is some action and some suspense and a bit of danger, but the story always comes back to and revolves around these two interesting characters - how they cooperate, how they react to each other, how they react to events, even how they deal with the world. That's what distinguished this book for me, and that might appeal to others as well.

Great debut! Let's see where it goes...
By Darkxy
I have a certain spot in my heart for a MG murder mysteries. There isn't anything quite like smart, curious kids trying to solve Agatha Christie-style case. Pretty much any book that mentions this type of synopsis will get my attention. I'm happy to say that new series (first published in England) from author Robin Stevens is a pleasure to dive into and will deliver on all fronts if you're a fan of the genre!

I read the book in one sitting, and setting of a Deepdean School for Girls is a perfect fit for Wells and Wong first case. There is a certain English charm and sort-of Victorian style to the story. I absolutely loved the fact the our main heroines are not yet another carbon copies of Nancy Drew (I love Nancy very much ;), but rather interesting evolving personalities, whose friendship is just as big part of the story as the mystery itself. I'd like to say ,however, that while mystery and adventures that girls went through are very exciting and executed top-notch, it is the girls, or rather Daisy that led me to a 4-star rating instead of 5. Unfortunately, while Daisy's character indeed goes through changes and ultimate redemption - I'm afraid I never quite warmed up to her. It is important for me (as a very character-driven person) to be able to relate/or understand main protagonists from which point of view I'm reading a book - but Daisy happened to not be someone I would endlessly cheer for.

Other then this nitpick of mine, I liked the book very much and am looking forward to reading the other two books in the series. Also, as a side note, the books are being reprinted in USA with a different covers, and the American version of "Murder Most Unladylike" is called "Murder is Bad Manners" - it is THE SAME book. Be aware of this name mix-up and Happy Reading!

A Cult Classic from the Brilliant Minds of National Lampoon
By Amazon Customer
You gotta see this book to believe it! Because its not just written humor or the wild imagination of one Artist. This was a group effort. Sean Kelly, who worked with National Lampoon is the principle writer, but there were many others involved too. You might say it's a comedy skit turned into a books with sculptures and drawings etc too. The Artists took the idea of the Little People ( see Celtic/norse mythology) and then created vinettes with their sculptures /drawings in many odd settings. Then ,of course ,there is the humour, most of which pokes fun at you know ,everyday life. One is the the Household Unfamiliars. There is a Grotesque ,nude creature worthy of Tolkien inside a Real Refrigerator. Blue spots on the bread are a sign that The Household Unfamliar lives in your Frig! It's really strange and fun at the same time! If you like Gorey , you will like this book.!

Seriously ,where did all the little people go?
By Amazon Customer
The tale of the fair people, the mystery of their treasure, the whereabouts of their descendents.
The modern-day descendants of the fairy folk include: The Tupperwerewolves, The Spirit of '76, and The Night Mayor.
This is an interesting guidebook to the fair folks, beginning over three hundred years ago when they fled the Old World for the New, with them came their precious jewels: diamonds, rubies, emeralds, pearls. Then they vanished.
The treasures are spread across North America, the key to finding each can be found within the twelve full color paintings and verses of The Secret. Full account of the modern forms and hiding places of their descendants. Illustrated profusely with curious and alluring artwork: twelve color plates of paintings, b/w photography of Elvin beings - fair and ugly in natural and man made settings, wonderfully detailed full page monochromatic drawings. Gives range, habits, history and spotter's tips for a wide variety of curious species. 224pp
