A fantastic read...

This was my first experience of Gillian White. And I must say; I will definetly be reading her other works. Infact, this book got me rather excited, and I look forward to purchasing further books by White.
The story is good. Rose and her husband Michael; the perfect couple. Jessie and Daisy; the couple's rather bizzare and strange daughters. Dinah; Rose's interfering and blunt mother. Jasmine; Jessie's rather 'manly' and religious friend. And Belinda; the twisted focus of the novel.
I don't want to give too much of the plot away, but I found it to be written with suspense, and rather dark humour. I laughed aloud during much of this book, much to the dismay of fellow passengers on the London Underground. Rose is an excellent character; almost demented by her insecurities. The commentary she makes on life is hilarious. Then the plot gets nasty.
Gripping, well-told, and funny, this book is a must have for those who like their thrillers tinged with a slick of black comedy. Go on, you know you want to buy it.
I should also add that I usually read a book in a month or two. This book I read over a weekend.

Quintessential Dysfunctional Family & Others

A sadistic novel to be sure. One character notes how difficult it is to sleep when reading Steven King too close to bedtime. Ditto for the "Night Visitor." Pages and pages of sadism and self-pity, then an ending so quick it was as though the author had run out of ways to torture and tease the reader. If I had had the book to read, would have skipped ahead to the end [unheard of for me]; however, I listened to Jilly Bond's narration all the way through. She's good, the author is not [particularly talented]. The author demands complete suspension of disbelief, of all common sense. It's one thing to get pulled into a character's craziness, another to assume the rest of the character's world will follow suit. Example, the family MD believes everything Rose tells him, caves in totally to all of her refusals, never checks with any medical staff or the hospital in Venice. Whether the family has NIH or private insurance, neither would have provided nursing care without tests/better documentation than the MD's say so. The plot begins understandingly enough and then devolves into nauseating sadism. The wimpyness of the family members and of the MD are pitiful excuses to keep the tortured plot lumbering along. One of those books that momentarily seems to have all loose ends tied up, but a few minutes after "The End,"
I found myself repeatedly saying, "wait a minute here, what about...?" Jilly Bond, however, is very good. And I stayed with her to the end.

Just be honest.

I enjoyed this book alright, but I really hated the main character. Admittedly, I don't think a world exists where you're supposed to like her or sympathize with Rose in any way. I definitely don't recommend this book to people that have issues with that kind of thing, because Rose is just as despicable as they come and feels totally justified in her actions. But Gillian White is really great at writing characters like that.
I also don't recommend the book to people that need a firm resolution and for the bad guys to get their comeuppance at the end. I guess that's the way it happens in life, though.
I liked this book, but for the same reasons it drove me crazy, it was telling a pretty clear message - be honest, don't keep secrets, else some crazy consequences might find you.

The Cleverest Caper of Them All!

This true story set in Victorian London in 1855 is a beauty of a read. With Michael Crichton weaving his magic over the scene and Edward Pierce, mastermind and protagonist, we have an unbeatable combination. The author does wonders describing authentic period scenes and showing us the huge divide between the English middle class and the wretched poor in Victorian times.
Edward Pierce wants 12,000 pounds sterling that will be sent by rail to fund the Crimean War. The obstacles are huge. It takes four keys to get to and unlock the safe. This was before the days of nitroglycerine, so the safe could not be blown, and it was too heavy to carry away. All four keys are held by separate persons and must be found and copied. The thieves have to get the payload unseen off of a moving train. Mr. Pierce has a hazy background, presents himself as a wealthy traveling businessman with a fine home in London, a well-dressed gentleman with an appreciation of the finer things. As we get to know him better, we learn he has nerves of steel, a quick and clever wit, and is relentless planner with infinite patience. He is blessed with a mysterious mistress, Miriam, whose acting abilities could put Meryl Streep to shame. The suspense and tension as Pierce and his accomplice, Robert Algar, work for a solid year on their plan is riveting. Naturally, when the heist takes place, even the most careful plans have to change with unforeseen circumstances. Will they get away with it? Read it and see.
The author puts us in the skins of Victorian people of the time. For instance, the police department is only 25 years old. London citizens were accustomed to being very hands-on when a crime is committed. Not like today when one's first thought is to call the police. If a criminal was observed picking a pocket, there would likely be a great hue and cry by the nearest citizens and all would chase the thief until they caught him. Only then, would they call the police. A married woman was the "property" of her husband. This of course, is abominable for her human rights, but if she is caught say counterfeiting money, her husband goes to jail, not her. After all, he is responsible for his property.
"The Great Train Robbery" was made into a movie in the late '70s with Sean Connery as Mr. Pierce. One way or another, I am going to see it. This is a great read and a well-done social history of one of the most fascinating men of the age. Highly recommended.

Crichton's writing skills are truly amazing. After you read other books written by this famous author, you will not believe that this book has been written by him. The reason that I say this, is because when I started reading the first few pages, I thought I had ordered the wrong book. With an old English writing style, you will be amazed at how he can use various different writing styles, and still produce a fantastic book.

The story is exciting in its own right, but Crichton takes it to a whole new level.

Outstanding Retelling of the Legendary Caper

Drawing heavily from court records and testimony, Chrichton's novel of historical fiction recreates the ingenious planning and execution of perhaps the most famous crime in British history. It's a novel in a very loose sense of the word, since throughout the book, Chrichton stops the proceedings to explain Victorian social customs for several pages at a time. But this is not a complaint at all, for the details on dog fighting, rats, gender roles, fear of premature burial, chimney sweeps, tipping servants, the Crimean War, safecracking, and most importantly urbanization and railroads, are all integral to the crime, and fascinating historical tidbits in their own right.
Central to the entire crime is the understanding that in the 1855, there was no such thing as dynamite or other explosives, so safes really were impregnable without keys or unlimited to time to pick them. Thus, the robbery of the monthly gold shipment that traveled by rail to France to pay for the Crimean War was deemed inconceivable, as opening the safes required four keys which were held in three separate locations. However, along comes Edward Pierce, a safecracker and master con artist who wanted that gold. The book tells how using an incredible array of scams, assistants and associates, misdirection, boldness, and quick thinking, he obtains copies of the four keys and embarks on the theft of the century. Crichton does this is a fairly documentary style for the most part, however the dialogue amongst the criminals sparkles with period underworld slang (all of which he stops to explain).
The story is recounted with continual reference to the trial, so its clear from the get go that the plot was successful, yet somehow the plotters were caught. Even knowing this in advance, the suspense is maintained throughout as the plotters encounter unexpected difficulties, last minute roadblocks, and increased police attention. And despite this knowledge of the trial, the ultimate outcome is shocker. I can't say how closely Chrichton adhered to the facts of the plot, but the social context of mid-19th century England he puts it in is certainly well researched and accurate. Sure to please fans of of the David Mamet films House of Games, The Spanish Prisoner, The Heist, and of course the classic George Hill movie, The Sting.

Star Trek: Log One (1974), by Alan Dean Foster, contains three novellas adapted from the first three episodes of Star Trek: The Animated Series: "Beyond the Farthest Star," "Yesteryear," and "One of Our Planets is Missing." Here, the crew investigates an ancient derelict ship, Spock travels back in time to save his child self, and the Enterprise is swallowed by a planet-eating cloud.

Each novella is about sixty pages, and generally, this is a good length for this material, although there's quite a bit more setup, especially for "Beyond," and the pacing tends to be on the leisurely side. Foster has a narrative flair for the dramatic, and his characters often ponder grand cosmic thoughts. The overall effect is a different tone and feel from either The Original Series or TAS. The stories themselves are solid if not spectacular; "Yesteryear" was easily the best TAS episode, and, with the most character focus of the three, it's the best story here, too.

Foster's characterization is adequate at best, and the dialogue doesn't always ring true. The Kirk-Spock-McCoy interplay isn't on the level that Trek fans will likely expect, and tends to lack both charm and humor. Kirk himself is uncharacteristically awkward at times, while the Spock-McCoy exchanges are more immature and less good-spirited than what we saw on either TOS or TAS.

The only scientific nitpick here is in "Beyond," where the characters regularly experience sound on a ship with no atmosphere (although in fairness, every iteration of Star Trek going back to TOS has abused this).

On the whole, Star Trek fans should find Star Trek: Log One reasonably readable and enjoyable, whether they've seen TAS or not.

PreSchool-Willa can't go to sleep, so she enlists the help of her big brother Willoughby. He tells her to "think of something happy," but the toddler bunny can't think of anything on her own. Patiently, Willoughby points out happy things that await her in the morning: her chicken slippers and blue-and-white jumpsuit, breakfast food in the kitchen, toys in the living room, and the morning itself. Satisfied, Willa goes to sleep in his arms. This is a perfect book for wide-awake toddlers. The simple but beautifully crafted text has a soft rhythm to it, and paints a touching picture of the warm and loving relationship between the siblings. This is again reflected in the lovely illustrations, which radiate a sense of peace and coziness, and have all sorts of wonderful details to discover. The expressions on the bunnies' faces are just right. Their tree house has decorative accents throughout, and Willa has footie pajamas with carrots and lettuce printed on them. The oversize format insures that the book can be used in storytimes as well as for bedtime read-alouds. This is a winner in the tradition of Sam McBratney's Guess How Much I Love You (Candlewick, 1995) and Margaret Wise Brown's Goodnight Moon (HarperCollins, 1947).

A very sweet story

We really enjoy this sweet story. I like the the brother-sister relationship in the book. Willoughby is a helpful, patient, and caring big brother. The illustrations are fun and playful. The overall theme of the book is this loving relationship, plus the idea that "the morning is waiting just for you but it can't come unless you go to sleep." We have often used this idea (and this book) to help our son calm down for sleep.

An OK novel, but not as encompassing as the earlier Red Zone novel. To a degree, a tad confusing and disjointed and bordering on the surreal. I expected more from the author given his many other wonderful novels.

trained in the best of British ways

Mcnab and Chris Ryan seem to be having a writing competition since leaving the special air service, both very highly decorated, and able to write very accurately of things seen and done... So war as authentically as it gets
For my money, Ryan is winning, but beware, he also does kids stories, so read the biopsies
Now... Tom buckingham.
A young a new breed of warrior, trained in the best of British ways, then set loose, and all kinds of mayhem ensue.
Tom buckingham novels are the stuff of mission impossible.... Straight up, without screen writers to add their little bits of repartee and slicked over action
Buckingham is already slick and full of clever witisms, so for a rollicking good, full throttle adventure, set more in the urban theatre of the house next door, than on the battlefield, do no miss this.... And with so many books in this genre... This is a great opportunity to start at book one and follow it through until mcnab finally puts a double tap into his scone
If you are into this genre... It is a must read
And once again, Amazon have stifled my choice by not allowing me to rate at three and a half, so bugger em... I'm going four stars today

Formulaic and unsatisfying

I am a big fan of the Nick Stone books, but Fortress disappoints. The Buckingham character seems unconvincing and contrived. Perhaps the real life McNabb more closely resembles Stone and the author is stretching to flesh out the persona of the upper class Tom Buckingham.

The plot also fails to satisfy. It manages to be both preposterous and formulaic. Worse yet, several major strings are left hanging at the book’s end. In all likelihood they will be resolved in the third volume of this series in a predictable way.

The shallow plot and characters are redeemed somewhat by the occasional gritty action scenes. The cynical maneuverings of the British political establishment also add verisimilitude to the story. On the whole, though, it’s hard to avoid the suspicion that McNabb has lost interest in writing and is turning out books now simply to fulfill the terms of his contract.

     Launching a digital campaign, starting an online petition and recruiting a team of like-minded people, Lucy-Anne started a revolution. Hundreds of thousands of people signed the petition, wore the campaign t-shirt and dared to say #NoMorePage3. Lucy-Anne had never campaigned on anything before. She wasn't particularly political. She'd never been confrontational. But she found that you only need one thing to start a campaign -- and it isn't cash, experience or even a thick skin. It's passion.

With the look of this tome the standout, this is the best preteen-read-to-graphic-novel book I've yet seen, making it better than the Alex Rider, Charlie Higson young Bond, and even our co-adaptor's Artemis Fowl tie-ins. It's a lengthy book, for it doesn't appear wordy yet contains a satisfying amount of bulk. It reads fine, and looks splendid, and I have no problem recommending it." Amulet of Samarkand - graphic novel

I am an adult who collects exceptionally authored books for youth. Also, I am a retired illustrator.

I've never been a great fan of graphic novels. Most of them are visually hard to navigate and don't follow the original story line. This book, however, is so well illustrated that it is at once appealing to the eye and imagination of the reader, and it keeps to the original plot. I fell in love with it when I saw a copy at the local library and decided to purchase a copy of my own.

I recommend this book to youth and adults who wish to enjoy a well-done graphic novel.
