I was sad when this book finished, which is always a sign of a good book. It had a very real & believable storyline, I laughed and I cried & I got thoroughly caught up in the sometimes hilarious & sometimes sad life of Billy Mann.
I am a 44 year old woman & I was recommended this by a 50+ man. So a good read for both genders.

Don't Miss This One!

I first read EDDIE'S BASTARD about twelve years ago. Since then it has sat on my bookshelf along with a group of books I selfishly never loan out or share in case the unthinkable happens, and I don't get them back. They are precious books, their words and worlds full of brilliance and magic that transports me to other places and other times. Such books are rare which is why I guard them so carefully.

The scenario is simple - a baby in a basket is left on the doorstep of a dilapadated house whose sole occupant is an old drunkard, who as it turns out is the baby's grandfather. There is a note 'Eddie's Bastard scotch-taped to the basket but no sign of whoever left the baby. The old man, Thomas, whose son had been killed in Vietnam three months earlier, has given up on life and the baby, whom he names William (Billy) resurrects him. He brings up the boy with varying degrees of success and in the process the power of love brings them both redemption.

This is a strong, multi-faceted story and although this is my third reading of it, the writing is so vibrant that I never missed a word, ploughing through it in record time. It doesn't hesitate to describe abuse in all its many forms, physical and sexual abuse of children, bullying and all the negative aspects of society and yet the story is full of positive elements that far outweigh the darkness that at times threatens the main character, Billy. There is kindness and love and courage but to me the thing that made this book special was the hint of forces beyond our ken that hold the web of life together. There are things that the main characters in Eddie's Bastard cannot see, ghosts, that are forever observing, manipulating and helping to maintain the balance of the hero's life.

Don't miss reading this book. It is one of a kind and will leave you with a feeling of repletion like a good wine or a gourmet meal at the end of a day.

Dunning was historically accurate, not racist

I have just read "Reconstruction, Political & Economic, 1865-1877" by William A. Dunning and also the books on Reconstruction by Stampp, DuBois, Foner, and DuBose & Greer's "Alabama's Tragic Decade" and I wish to say that Dunning and the "Dunning School" was historically accurate and academically sound in his analysis of the "scar of Reconstruction" as recorded by the various historians and politicians during the 50 years after the war between the Confederacy and the United States (what was left of it after secession). The reviewer who stated that Dunning was "rationalizing the horrors of Reconstruction and Jim Crow segregation" and that "Dunning continues to exert a malevolent influence on Americans who seek to justify their racist views" is the one who is discredited. Dunning's book and works still play a major role in recording the errors of Reconstruction and the background to the politics and economics being played out by the Congress and the Reconstruction "governments" in the south during the "tragic decade". While Stampp, Dubois, and Foner have produced important works on the history of Reconstruction, nonetheless these authors revise the subject matter with a particular bias and with their own prejudices based on ethnicity. I rate all of them scholarly and accurate but the "elephant" they are describing is not just the tusks, trunk, legs, tail, and body of the elephant, but a total creature. Each has touched a part of the history of Reconstruction, including Dunning. Dunning is still historically accurate.

Interesting, but dead wrong

The "Dunning School," centered at a Columbia University where Dunning taught, provided the academic underpinnings for rationalizing the horrors of reconstruction and later of Jim Crow segregation. Dunning made "Birth of a Nation" possible.
Some of the material is useful for professional historians or students who are aware of the context. Much of the data is relevant.
But nearly 80 years after his death, Dunning continues to exert a malevolent influence on Americans who seek to justify their racist views. A tragedy, because Dunning himself would likely have acknowledged that he was wrong.
As it is, the "Dunning School" is totally discredited.

Old but Good!

When The Rowan was three years old, she lost her family in a mudslide. She was only spared because her mother had left her in the hopper, while she ran through the rain to get some groceries inside. It had been raining for weeks, and no one knew, the mud avalanche was building. Not one precog had foreseen it. The whole planet heard her mental cries for days, until she was found.
As a Ward of Altair, and a very powerfully Gifted child, The Rowan (named after the mining community she was born in, as she could not remember her given name), should be in the care of Altair’s Prime, Siglen. But Siglen didn’t care much for children, and Lusena, who got the care of The Rowan, kept making excuses for letting her stay with her and her children for as long as possible. But at the age of twelve, The Rowan had to go live with Siglen, to be trained as a Prime, in the responsibilities of operating a Tower. Every major planet in the Nine Star League has a Tower, and a Prime, or perhaps a pair of T2’s, to take care of business. Sending cargo, messages, freighters and passenger ships from one planet to the other, by means of telekinesis, and with the help of mighty generators. They are the most important assets a planet has. Of course they earn a lot of money, but the responsibility and work ethic is drilled in them from a young age. The work is hard, and there is no one else who can take it over, so they don’t have a lot of free time themselves.

The Rowan is lonely, totally without a family of her own, except for Lusena, and Geraloman, who takes care of the generators in the Tower. And her special pukha, named Purza. An upgrade to a normal stuffed animal, a being programmed to offer comfort and reassurance to a lonely child. But there are no children to play with, or time to be a child.
Earth Prime Reidinger has concocted a scheme to bring her in contact with other Talented children, out of whom she someday has to form her own Tower personnel. At first Rowan tries to blend in, but she soon discovers that as she is the Prime, her word is law. They will have to listen to her, and respect her. Some she likes, some not, but none of them is becoming anything close to a friend.

When Rowan looses her Purza thanks to a jealous cousin of Lusena, she is inconsolable. Siglen is unfeeling about it, she should have been weaned from that toy a long time ago! But thanks to Geraloman, Rowan gets a barquecat cub, which is a huge honor, as they normally only live aboard spaceships. They are better and faster then the humans in finding minute leaks and fissures in the ship hull and conduits.

When The Rowan has turned 18, Earth Prime Reidinger (who is a distant grandson of the original Peter Reidinger in the Pegasus books), assigns her her own Tower, on the moon Calisto. And there she lives and works hard for the next 10 years. Her agoraphobia is preventing her from travelling to Earth or any of the other planets in the league. This hurts, as all the other Talents, except the Primes, have no difficulty whatsoever with travelling through space.
Then someday, out of the blue, she gets contacted telepathically by a stranger, from the most recently colonised planet Deneb VIII, which is supposedly under attack by aliens! Jeff Raven needs help, and he wants her to alert Earth prime and send in the cavalry. But of course, military decisions are not made quickly, until Jeff deflects a few missiles to Earth, and they suddenly believe him. And so Deneb is saved for the moment, and Jeff Raven has come to Calisto to meet The Rowan, and thank her for her help. They have an instant connection, and know they are meant for each other. Due to the mindmeld with all the other Prime Talents in the Nine World League, they already know each other intimately, even though they are still strangers.

Of course Deneb has to pay heavily for the help they have gotten, and thanks to the weeks of biological attacks, and the fact that 2/5 of their population has been killed, they are virtually bankrupt. Jeff has been drafted by Earth Prime, but Deneb has not yet earned the privilege of their own Tower with a Prime. Will their relationship last, when The Rowan is unable to travel to her beloved?

I’ve read this series so often now, and I still highly enjoy it. Especially this book. And I absolutely adore that cover! Every time I read it, I stare at it for a few minutes.

The book is divided in parts, detailing a part of the life of The Rowan (Rowan for short). Her childhood and youth, her time on Calisto, the Deneb part, and of course, the last part ;)
You have to love and admire Rowan, she is such a great character, such a strong little girl to cope with everything that comes on her path. Her path is not easy, and often very lonely, until she meets Afra, a young Capellan boy who comes to work in her Tower. Afra also becomes her closest friend and confidant. But she is still lonely, longing for a soul mate.

If you like sci-fi with some romance thrown into it, with great characters, I heartily recommend this series. There is no need to read the Pegasus series first. Anne McCaffrey has a very distinct writing “voice”. Very descriptive, a great pace, the books are never boring, though sometimes a little too much techno talk for me to follow.

I loved it from start to finish. A great story about tele-kineses. The use of mind-power to get things done. And Damia is an exceptional woman, with exceptional powers. A woman who knows what she wants....

Brilliant beginning to a brilliant series.

Anne McCaffrey is one of the great fantasy writers. This, the first of the Tower and Hive series follows on direct from the 3 Pegasus books in which human brain powers such as telekinesis and telepathy are first solidly identified.

Moving into the future The Rowan is the story of a little girl who has stellar powers and will change the face of human travel.

All her books are well written and a joy to read. this series is one of the best.

The prose is delightfully old-fashioned and enthusiastic. Royce loved his subject, and you can feel it in every word. However, whoever scanned this paid absolutely no attention whatsoever to the end product. The number of errors and bizarre presentations renders it almost unreadable. Words bro ken, and sometimes p

This edition is awful though the book itself is very interesting.

The book itself is very interesting but this kindle edition is sub-par with odd spacing and obviously little care in the presentation. Many of the pictures and maps are unreadable. So though I like the book itself, I cannot recommend this version which is extremely hard to read.

Poor copy of a good book. Almost every page has a photograph or illustration. Unfortunately, the quality of these photographs and illustrations is poor. They look like they were made with a cheap copy machine. Otherwise, I would give this four or five stars. It is a shame that the publisher, Forgotten Books, could not have done a better job.

Who Knew?

I remember picking up this book at a thrift store and the low price tag and of couse title caught my eye. At the time, I was pretty sceptical but, I started doing what Wendy says in her book and it actually worked! I have almost every book on how to slim your thighs but this is one of the most effective I've ever tried. It's realistic in it's approach and I was pleased with the results. It worked as well as ballet class did when I was younger. If you're able to pick up a copy do it! I highly recommend this book.

ACK! There's a shark in the park!!!!

The little boy in this book is looking through his telescope in the park and is sure he keeps seeing a shark. The lense is an actual hole in the pages of the book, and as each page is turned the fin of the shark turns out to be something quite ordinary (ie. a cat, a crow, even the dad's Elvis-style haircut). This brightly illustrated book contains clever rhymes and pleasent repetition so kids can begin to chant along with the reader, and a surprise at the end leaves them giggling every time.

I'm a Shark now!

I bought this book on a whim and it was the best purchase ever. I am a preschool teacher and this book became the class favorite as soon as I brought it to school. We read it many times a day, and the children can read the book themselves they know it so well. The illustrations are wonderful and the children learn directions such as up, down, left and right and really enjoy yelling, "Shark in the Park!!" at the top of their lungs. At our school your class is named after a animal, due to this book we are now...the Shark group. Please buy this book you will not be dissapointed!

Fun colors, happy drawings in a cute guessing game book.

This book is full of repetition and rhyming fun. Timothy is at the park testing out his new telescope and thinks he keeps seeing a shark. Three of the pages have holes through them so that one might guess what he is seeing before the next page is turned. It never truly is a shark that he sees in the park but this is a fun book to read with a child ages 2-6 to see their expressions, guesses to the telescope hole page and reaction to what it really is that Timothy is seeing. This story would be fun to use in a kindergarten class when shapes are being taught.
