About the Author
Janey was born in Edinburgh and grew up by the seaside just outside the city. Janey published the first two Princess Poppy books herself (with her own illustrations) and the books were so popular that Random House Children's Books soon bought the series and re-packaged the books. The series is now going from strength to strength, including picture books, novels for young readers, activity books and sumptuous gift books. Janey read English at Edinburgh University specializing in the Victorian novel. Following this she became a teacher - a career that she absolutely adored - and then, with her husband, set up The Jelly Club, which has become an extremely successful chain of children's activity centres in Scotland. She still very much enjoys visiting schools and talking to children to find out what they like doing and what makes them laugh. Janey and her husband live in Scotland with their three sons. Veronica gained a BA in Graphic Design at Bradford and Liverpool Polytechnic which led her into the world of greetings card design and then book illustration. Veronica says that her favourite thing about illustrating picture books is inventing characters and bringing them to life through her illustrations. Veronica lives and works in the small market town of Otley in West Yorkshire, and in her spare time she enjoys long-distance cycling in the Yorkshire Dales with her partner.

These Books are very Sweet!

I bought a Princess Poppy book for my 5-year old granddaughter when I was in England. She absolutely loved the book and asked for more. When her tooth became loose I bought this book. It is very sweet and comes with a special envelope to put a tooth in for the tooth fairy. The only bad thing had nothing to do with the book but the mail. It was packaged quite well however a corner of the package was ripped open and a corner of the book was damaged. Since it came from the UK I wasn't going to reorder.

A Dark Mindbender

Ouf! Dangerous Liaisons meets Rickety Tickety Tin!
Joanne Harris always crafts a superb plot. She really must have had fun doing this one. The structure of the tale is based in webjournals like the letters in Dangerous Liaisons. As in Dangerous Liaisons, rapier-like twists leave one quite lacerated. A fascinating exploration of the creation and functioning of psychopathic minds. And like Tom Lehrer's song Rickety Tickety Tin, things become increasingly ghoulish. In this schizpophrenic world, sudden shifts in personalities and identities leave one doubting reality. Joanne Harris takes a radical departure from the pastoral French rural idylls for which she is best known- such a departure that I was regaining my breath after each new mindbender and didn't have the time to miss the trademark rustic foodie world I love so much. It was like the buildup to a rollercoaster smash. This tale was hard to put down. What a versatile author. The story and style of the book call for an intense degree of perception, which she delivers. But don't expect the gentle entertainment that her better known books offer

Very clever and well written but I simply did not enjoy this one.

I have been reading and generally enjoying, sometimes loving the writing of Joanne Harris for a long time. This time with blue eyed boy after reading all 527 pages I am left wondering why I bothered. It was not the writing as that was up to her normal high standards. No this time I just could not get my head around this somewhat strange story. The fascinating aspect of the story and possibly the reason I kept reading was that Synaesthesia plays an important role in the story. Also interesting is that it is written in the form of an online journal. If you have read Gentleman and Players you will recognise the setting for this novel as it is also set in the Yorkshire town of Malbry.

Once upon a time there were three brothers, Black Brown and Blue as they were known by their widowed mother. Blueeyedboy is single, early forties and living at home with his mother. He has a mundane job and no social life apart from his virtual one. He spends a vast amount of time online, on a website he set up it seems to play out his fantasies. Most of his online interaction is with Albertine, with whom in the real world he shares a troubled past. The scenarios he talks about in his web journal are of dark murder. Our protagonist plays out his life on the internet so we slowly learn of his dysfunctional family background and his connections to Emily the blind child prodigy who was also part of his childhood. His mind games will lead you to a conclusion that will not answer all your questions but leave you with something to think about. This I believe was the author's intention.

It seems I am not alone in my thoughts, as opinion on this novel seems to be very much divided and I quote Joanne Harris : `Never has one of my books received such a "Marmite" reaction. Love it or hate it? What kind of reader are you?' I am not I do not think of a sensitive disposition and I was not terrified as the back cover suggested I might be, I just simply did not enjoy it! Disappointing as after enjoying Gentleman and Players her first psychological thriller, I expected more from this one. Joanne Harris's writing has in the past tended towards the dark side of human nature but this time I found it just too heavily weighted. Love, Like or Hate this novel will certainly give food for thought especially about the darker side of how one can portray oneself on the internet.

"The Harrowing of Hubertus"

Originally published in 1954 as "The Harrowing of Hubertus", and as "Hubertus" the following year in the US, this is Edgar Mittelholzer's second book of the Kaywana Trilogy. It's also known by the titles "Kaywana Stock" and "Kaywana Heritage" in later paperback editions.

I read this novel without having read the first book, "The Children of Kaywana"; however, this didn't affect my comprehension of it, for each three books in the trilogy stand alone as narratives. The original title suits the novel perfectly, because this is mainly what Hubertus van Groenwegel is going through: he is harrowed.

Hubertus is harrowed by many conflicts: being loyal to the flesh and the spirit is the main cause of conflict within himself throughout the book. Being loyal to the spirit is set by the rules of morality imposed by the church; rules which Mittelholzer criticizes as not being realistic or in accordance to the nature of the flesh. Humans should also be loyal to the flesh, for it is part of human nature, a nature that God Himself created. Men created morality, which prevents them from being happy and which clashes and contradicts the nature God created. In chapter 7, Mittelholzer states:

"What troubles me is not the moral or ecclesiastical aspect of the matter - but myself. My own personal code. My spirit is vulnerable in that it is wounded when my personal code - the special, particular philosophy I have shaped fo myself - seems to me to have been contravened... This is what depresses me. This is what brings me closer to the grave. Every time I contravene my personal code some part of me crumbles and Death takes two paces towards me."

Hubertus is well admired in the community of Dutch and British planters and respected for being a man of wisdom. However, is it wise to keep "contravening" his personal code if this continually harrows him? Being loyal to the flesh is something Hubertus is not willing to give up, so to listen to him complaining about how this harrows him from beginning to end makes him not exactly a likeable character. This makes me wonder "why do you do it, then? Man up and stick to your code without hurting other people in the way!"

I am not saying that a character needs to have a heroic personality, but all through the novel, we read about how grandma Hendrikje was a devilish woman, which made me wonder why I hadn't read "The Children of Kaywana" instead. She seemed a more interesting character because, while brutal and cruel, she stuck to her "personal code". I did like Edward van Groenwegel, Hubertus's younger cousin, because he has similar dilemmas and he comes off as a real character. In fact, it's Edward the reason why I decided to give the book four stars, because halfway through the book I was ready to give it three. At one moment in the book, Edward himself cannot stand Hubertus due to his double standards, which made me think: "Oh, so I'm not alone with this same feeling".

The novel has a historical setting and time. It is set in Guiana during the end of the 1700's. Slavery, plantations, the economy and the politics of the time are part of the story, although this plays a second role.

I was looking forward to reading this novel. I like novels about characters in crisis and this promised to be a good one. I have read his sixth novel, "The Life and Death of Sylvia", which is also about a character in crisis and loved it. "The Harrowing of Hubertus" is still a good novel to read, especially if you are a fan of Edgar Miteelholzer, for its depth in this contradiction of men between God and human nature. However, I didn't finish reading it with the feeling I have had with his other novels: "I cannot wait to read it again".

Another Triumph!

I am a loyal fan of Mr. Irving and have read his entire collection of stories over the years. But this book probably should have been edited down to a more reasonable size based on the nature of this particular story. It could have had some more material added and then possibly split into a sequel...

Despite the weighty moroseness and risqué portions of the book, which others have described, there are some other aspects of the story I found appealing. I found the minor characters to be very useful in fleshing out the living world around the main character and though some might think the number to be excessive, I think it actually helped.

Also, the masterful usage of flashbacks and a certain prevailing sincerity of conviction in telling the tale over all, kept me reading its 800+ pages.

It's a fine addition to his body of work and I eagerly await the next.

Also recommended, Anna's Trinity by Howard Cobiskey.

Make A Wish Upon A Star

Irving, John, Until I Find You. New York: Random House, 2005.

To write an 821 page novel you need a word processor. Processed words can get out of hand, can get to looking silly. On page 690 we read, "He is often seen sitting up in bed in the morning--just his top half, naked." Fine. But the author plunges on witlessly: "(The rest of him is under the sheets)." After reading endlessly about sex and tattoos and having sex and being tattooed, we get the ultimate confidential admission: that this author is tired. His word processor is wreathing the book with redundancies. That cost him a star in my review. Another star winked out because this Jack character the author presents is pretty boring. His sexuality is mixed as well as mixed-up; his lines as an actor come out of his mouth offstage. He's not worth the effort. The book lost a third star because early in the book Jack and his mother make a long trip around the North Sea ports when he is age four. By the time he repeats the trip, 400 pages later, we are days or weeks beyond that point in our reading and have forgotten where they went, who they met, and why it matters.

I would have given the book two stars were it not for the title, which is meaningless. Oh, and there's no humor.

Scarred for life?

John Irving has done something unique with 'Until I Find You'; he has stamped a permanent imprint on the reader, as indelible as the tattoos that cover the body of the organist William Burns, father of the novel's protagonist Jack. From here on whenever I see someone with a tattoo, I think I shall at once be transported back to Irving's world of North Sea ports, imposing cathedrals with their mighty organs, colorful tattoo parlors, and a lenghty cast of some of his most eccentric characters.

In the book's dedication, Irving wishes his own young son a childhood "as different from the one described here as anyone could imagine", and it is not difficult to see how the adventures of young Jack could easily lead to the kind of neurosis he would be dealing with throughout adulthood. At a tender age Jack is schlepped around Europe by his mother for an increasingly unclear purpose. At school he is thrown in alongside sexually rapacious girls and older women intent on the corruption of his innocence. As an adult, Jack is constantly besieged by both sexes drawn to his good looks and celebrity status. It would would take a miracle to come away from this with no emotional scarring, yet with the help of a no-nonsense psychologist, Jack does seem to be able to make some progress.

The reader does not actually meet the object of the book's title until the final chapter, so for over 700 pages we anticipate the reunion of Jack and his father. We want to find out for ourselves what kind of person William Burns really is, as Jack's dim remembrances and the second or third hand recollections of numerous acquaintances give us only conflicting impressions of this remarkable man.

Despite the somewhat melancholy tone of the narrative and several sad events, Jack's story does not ultimately turn out to be the tragedy one might have predicted. In the end, he shows that he is made of something deeper than just the surface gloss of an appeal that has attracted many in such superficial ways. Irving has always managed to tell his outrageous tales in an understated, matter-of-fact kind of way, and this is a good thing, for if the writing style was as manic as the material, Irving's work could easily become crazy-making and unreadable. Fortunately, Irving is a master of controlled style, and even while describing the crude and unsavory as he frequently does, his prose remains elegant and restrained.

'Until I Find You' has now joined my short list of Irving favourites, along with 'A Son of the Circus' and 'The Water-Method Man' -- neither of which, interestingly enough, has been made into a film. It wouldn't surprise me if a film attempt was made at this book, but I fear many of its subtleties would go by the wayside in a transfer to that medium. As a novel, however, it was extremely satisfying, and can be placed alongside Irving's best.

A qualified four stars

Sanford's "Midway" is the novel version of the well-known 1976 movie of the same name. It directly tracks the screenplay, also written by Sanford. The film has been reviewed at great length on the Battle of Midway Roundtable (midway42.org), and our members' opinions of it can be found on the "Midway Library" page on the website as well in our book "No Right to Win."

Since those opinions are mostly critical, one might expect to dismiss this book as irrelevant today, decades after it was written. Yes, factual and technical errors abound, and that silly soap opera plot involving fictional CINCPAC staffer Matt Garth, his son Tom (a VF-3 pilot) and Tom's Nisei girlfriend is all there for readers to quickly skip past. But Sanford's narrative aboard the warships and combat aircraft of both sides is another matter--it takes the reader into the actual battle in a way that you don't experience by simply reading a history book. The novelist has license to assume dialogue by historical characters that they may or may not have actually spoken, but the setting and the action are essentially factual, and they're rendered in the present tense with the battle's bombs and torpedoes thundering in the background. Reading the real-time dialogue of the likes of Nimitz, Rochefort, Fletcher, Simard, Waldron, Thach, McClusky, Yamamoto, Nagumo, Yamaguchi, Genda, and Tomanaga can be a remarkable experience for anyone strongly focused on the BOM, even when the dialogue is largely the author's guesswork on what they might have said.

To be sure, the nonfactual content of this book will make most knowledgeable readers cringe. But if you convince yourself up front that "Midway" is not the same type of book as "Incredible Victory" or "Shattered Sword," but is instead a means for taking the reader on an imaginary journey into the Battle of Midway itself, it can be an entertaining read--hence the highly qualified fours stars.

And perhaps best of all, you can find copies of the book for practically nothing--mine came from Amazon for one cent plus shipping, about three bucks total. If nothing else, it's a key addition to anyone's BOM media collection because of its founding on the battle's signature movie.

I really enjoyed this classic that was associated from the 70's movie. The book is heavy on the strategy and tactics to align the battle and steps you through both sides. Enjoyable quick read!!!
